Can't play the game, Download failed, Some kinda virus?
I tried to launch the game recently and my antivirus said it needed to quarantine a certain file in the game (sadly I don't remember which) because it was infected by a virus (also don't know which one), or so it claimed. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling the game but it just keeps saying download failed and I don't know how to fix it.

you're antivirus is the virus, temp turn it off and try again, and if you know how report it as a false negative.

I'm confused what you mean by this

what he means is that antivirus software was wrong.

Which can happen when you use AV software that uses 'heuristics' for detecting viruses. That's a fancy name for making 'educated guesses".

Anyway, most likely the file that was quarantined is needed by the game for it to function. Reinstalling does you no good because the AV is just blocking that file now that it has quarantined it once.

If that is the case, you'll need to tell your AV not to block the file in question. There should also be a way to remove it from quarantine and report it as a false positive from within the AV software.

Removing it from quarantine should restore it and make the game functional again without needing to reinstall, but of course it might be too late for that seeing as you already tried to reinstall.

Nothing that downloads from Steam, at least as far as NMS goes, should be reported by any anti-virus. Turn yours off temporarily. In fact, many anti-virus apps are actually interfering more than they help, or, as Ritsuka implied, are the virus themselves. These days, you are much better off relying on Windows' own firewall only.

It would be interesting for you to share which antivirus you use, so we can all avoid it.
Your antivirus sure sucks.

Lol the only anti virus program you'll ever need is Windows Defender.

You should tell us how your antivirus is called. We´ll probably be able to help you.

Its most likely a "false positive" and doesn´t need to be blocked. The chance of downloading malware through steam is really slim and if something like this happens, it will probably make news (at least "gaming news").

For free antivirus tools and most paid one as well its true.

As long as you don´t do freaky stuff on the internet, windows defender is generally more than enough for the normal end user.

Without knowing what AV software you use, no one can answer.

i hate "anti virus" programs.. i used to do tech support and about 90% of the problems started with
"it was fine yesterday" (which is completely useless, like well, the house wasn't on fire yesterday)
ok.. what did you change, "Nothing"
what did you install "nothing... just blah blah antivirus program"
seriously cause more problems then a virus.
just let windows defender handle it.. and don't open weird files from sites / people you don't know.
