so around my settlements when traveling to them 1 of them has GOG next to it??? what is that and why is it there? i use the Xbox launcher if that has anything to do with it.

It's an online gamestore. Originally catered to old games (Good Old Games, GoG) and DRM-free, now you'll find they have most modern games, including NMS.

I buy almost exclusively from GOG (my NMS is GOG) cos they still allow true gaming freedom like in the old days. I'm actually surprised someone hasn't heard of it.

Formerly known as Good Old Games, now officially just GOG (since they dropped focus on older game revival), GOG[en.wikipedia.org] is another storefront/platform hybrid similar to Steam. Owned and operated by CD Projekt, GOG gained favor among consumers for taking an anti-DRM and retro-revival stance (owing to a history of counter-copyright culture in their home of Poland), an incorrect perception that you "own" the games you buy on GOG compared to other services, and a number of... questionable PR stunts, they've fallen on relatively hard times over the past few years, with restructures in 2019 and 2021 leading to them ending many of their more unique features like price region credit, Steam library credit (GOG Connect), and focus on old game restoration (which had already significantly eroded since they began distributing modern games in 2012).

It's a decent service, no worse or better in the long run than Steam.

I had this originally on ps4 and gog, but I could not figure out how to use a game controller with gog so I ended up here and it works great. I tried adding a non steam game to steam to try controller, but it won't let me find the official controller mappings, only custom works.
