expeditions have never been paased off as updates... updates and expeditions are named meaning you can't mistake one for the other
...but if you're going, bye... but you really don't need made-up silly excuses to go
We'll probably get another small update or two then a big summer update. I suspect this year's summer update is going to be a game changer, but that is pure speculation. Be patient the updates are coming.
NMS is still a long way away from being an MMO, so don't get your undies in a bunch.
It kinda is the point. All of the new content is added to the game, forever, and you also get to play the Expeditions. You may miss some of the rewards if don't complete the expedition, but if that matters to you, just edit your save and give yourself the stuff.
But what elements are you seeing that are only available in the expeditions?
I have no interest in playing expeditions because I'm allergic to directed gameplay in any game. So, I couldn't care less. I also don't play video games with other people. No interest in doing so partly because, being older than dirt and having played video games since Pong was the latest technology, it's kind of a foreign concept to me. But I understand that other people have different likes and interests than I do and that it's not all about me and what I want. I'm happy that the developers give different kinds of players things they want, especially if it means that the game continues to make money for them so they continue to develop it. Especially because I get all the stuff, too, except maybe some cosmetic expedition rewards that I don't care about anyway.
In the end, expeditions are just a way to quickly introduce new aspects of the game to both new and old players. So, you can do them and get your quick introduction to the new shinies and maybe a little boost to your save, or you can just find things out for yourself in the course of playing normally. No one's making anyone do expeditions. No one's turning NMS into an MMO. Heck, if you must have the rewards you can get from an expedition, get yourself a save editor and get them at any time without having to do an expedition.
I just don't understand complaints like this. At all. But if this is really a dealbreaker for you, I'm sorry and I hope you find a game that is and stays more to your liking.
Yea...
MMO, by definition, is: "A massively multiplayer online game (MMOG or more commonly MMO) with a large number of players on the same server." As NMS does not have servers, (other than one for discoveries and one for bases In think), it can in no way be described as an MMO.

Need I continue? Or should I just remind that the wiki[nomanssky.fandom.com] has a list of all expeditions and it's easy to backtrack an expedition to its patch and see the full breadth of content released with most. A few expeditions, like Omega, were released with small patches, but even Omega's small patch had significant content unrelated to the expedition.
tl;dr
Not sure where you're getting your information, but the expeditions have NOT stolen focus from general content releases.
