Expeditions ruined he game
"You don't have to play them!"

That's not the point. The updates lately focus too much on them instead of adding content for everybody, including people who play singleplayer, so as someone who only plays multiplayer with my friends, I feel like I've been left in the dust for the past few updates.

I don't think this game is for me anymore. It's been progressively leaning more and more into being an MMO, with all the problems MMOs have like FOMO with the limited events (expeditions) and forced multiplayer with strangers if you want to participate in an expedition for the limited-time gear.

I like what it used to be. I liked the initial multiplayer update because it let me play with my friends. I was ok with the Nexus update. I didn't think it would become this kind of service.

I wish they never added expeditions, then they wouldn't hype up expedition seasons like they're real updates the way they did with the last 2 updates. It's not a real update if the content GOES AWAY after a while. It's only a real update if the changes are PERMANENT and available for EVERYBODY regardless of whether or not they played within a 4-week window.

If Light No Fire launches with this mentality too, I'm also gonna pass on it. It looks cool, but I don't have the energy for these kinds of games. I like what it used to be, it's not that anymore. I wish they didn't abandon their old players in favor of MMO players.

I used to not care and just ignore it because "Well, I don't have to do it" back when the updates were actual updates and the expedition was just a side-thing but now it's become the main thing and I'm just, I dunno. I'm done, I guess.

I've uninstalled the game. I might reinstall it down the line when friends want to play, but the updates are genuinely not worth getting excited about anymore for me since they don't add any content that interests me (like being able to paint ships, or fishing, for example) so I'd imagine when I do reinstall it, it'll be several "updates" down the line, and the game will mostly be exactly where it is right now.

To all the people who came in after they started converting NMS into an MMO and like it this way: Have fun I guess, thanks for taking it away from older players.

Edit: Someone pointed out you can do expeditions in singleplayer... They are still timed events and I'm still too old to deal with games making me play on THEIR time and not MINE. If the content an update adds isn't available to earn a year after that update launches, it's not a real update. (And no, recurring events don't count.)

MP is not reqd. for expeditions... a couple of expeditions in the past had an milestone that meant interacting with other players, but it wasn't continued, the optional community milestones more recently, do not require anyone to switch MP on to complete them.
expeditions have never been paased off as updates... updates and expeditions are named meaning you can't mistake one for the other
...but if you're going, bye... but you really don't need made-up silly excuses to go

You're giving geezers a bad name. Stop it!

I'm not a big fan of expeditions, I do them, but if they didn't exist I wouldn't miss them. That said the developers aren't spending that much time on them. This was a very small update which makes the expedition look proportionally bigger, but it really isn't.

We'll probably get another small update or two then a big summer update. I suspect this year's summer update is going to be a game changer, but that is pure speculation. Be patient the updates are coming.

NMS is still a long way away from being an MMO, so don't get your undies in a bunch.

That's not the point.

It kinda is the point. All of the new content is added to the game, forever, and you also get to play the Expeditions. You may miss some of the rewards if don't complete the expedition, but if that matters to you, just edit your save and give yourself the stuff.

But what elements are you seeing that are only available in the expeditions?

5 weeks to do a few missions to get some free goodies. Oh no. The horrors!

MMO? LOL! :steamhappy:

bear in mind that everyone benefits from expeditions, they increase the visibility of the game encouraging new sales and then HG doesn't need to charge us for updates... it's a unique business model in the games industry.... and i'di say a great alternative to paid DLC's and micro-transactions... so even if i didn't enjoy expeditions i'd still support them

Oh, for heaven's sake.

I have no interest in playing expeditions because I'm allergic to directed gameplay in any game. So, I couldn't care less. I also don't play video games with other people. No interest in doing so partly because, being older than dirt and having played video games since Pong was the latest technology, it's kind of a foreign concept to me. But I understand that other people have different likes and interests than I do and that it's not all about me and what I want. I'm happy that the developers give different kinds of players things they want, especially if it means that the game continues to make money for them so they continue to develop it. Especially because I get all the stuff, too, except maybe some cosmetic expedition rewards that I don't care about anyway.

In the end, expeditions are just a way to quickly introduce new aspects of the game to both new and old players. So, you can do them and get your quick introduction to the new shinies and maybe a little boost to your save, or you can just find things out for yourself in the course of playing normally. No one's making anyone do expeditions. No one's turning NMS into an MMO. Heck, if you must have the rewards you can get from an expedition, get yourself a save editor and get them at any time without having to do an expedition.

I just don't understand complaints like this. At all. But if this is really a dealbreaker for you, I'm sorry and I hope you find a game that is and stays more to your liking.

Yea...
MMO, by definition, is: "A massively multiplayer online game (MMOG or more commonly MMO) with a large number of players on the same server." As NMS does not have servers, (other than one for discoveries and one for bases In think), it can in no way be described as an MMO.

OP: Where's my free content. 😭 I didn't pay for it, so surely I deserve to be catered to. Just read my mind.

Expeditions can be single player, though...

Wait, so all of the content that's been dropped in every update alongside every expedition, which the expeditions have been used to showcase... never happened? I think you're mistaken.

Update 3.30 - Expeditions
Exp1: Pioneers
Update highlights, unrelated to expedition:
  • Space station mission overhaul
  • Mission target Sweep system
  • Permanent weekend Missions
  • Explorer starship enhancements
  • Sentinel combat overhaul
  • Waypoint icon overhaul
  • Multiplayer improvements

Update 3.60 - Frontiers
Exp3: Cartographers
Update highlights, unrelated to expedition:
  • Settlements and all underlying systems
  • Build menu overhaul
  • Expanded save slots
  • Destruction effect overhaul
  • Hundreds of new base parts
  • Overhauled base building controls

Update 3.80 - Sentinel
Exp5: Exobiology
Update highlights, unrelated to expedition:
  • Sentinel overhaul, adding more types and combat features
  • AMD FidelityFX support
  • Nvidia DLAA support
  • Cloaking device
  • Minotaur AI
  • Multi-tool cap increase
  • Sentinel pillars and lore
  • Ability to suppress sentinel activity
  • Neutron Cannon MT weapon
  • Build mode improvements
  • More grenade weapons
  • Royal multi-tools

Need I continue? Or should I just remind that the wiki[nomanssky.fandom.com] has a list of all expeditions and it's easy to backtrack an expedition to its patch and see the full breadth of content released with most. A few expeditions, like Omega, were released with small patches, but even Omega's small patch had significant content unrelated to the expedition.

tl;dr
Not sure where you're getting your information, but the expeditions have NOT stolen focus from general content releases.

Also, personally, not loving the "Let's make you repeat the game all over again and call it new content" vibe I get from Expeditions
