Trust me I've been there. it is one of the worst games ever at conveying basic information. if it isn't a bugged waypoint, it's unhelpful instructions like Hyaline/Harmonic brain or 'gather seeds of the universe' or some other dumb crap that's ultimately just your average macguffin with a fancy name that makes no sense.
anyway .
I've never had any of these kinds of problems. Now, sure it can be annoying when the game keeps prompting you to hatch a creature egg or something else, but they added the ability to cycle through different hints to get to the one you need.
That said, I do recall someone saying that the hyaline brain was bugged (mine worked fine), and if that happens, go to the space station and buy an alien site map, save, use the map until you find a monolith and then take the hyaline brain to it to convert it into a harmonic brain so you can complete the repair of the ship.
its not really user error i do know how to switch to my quests but it is true what he is saying the opjectives always change when its not even used in expeditions and its annoying when you try to do them it instandly get switched over
there has been alot of changes made to the mission handling including the tips/hints... you can now cycle thru them and even leave it blank (for a while) they also addressed some (but not all) of the switching missions issues

That way you wouldn't have to defend the indefensible- such as:
8 freaking years dude. it took 8 years for them to figure out this simple thing. And it still doesn't work right? That is just bad period!
Yes its very annoying bc it never should have done that. It's bad design. How's about this: you select your mission and then game tells you what to do. It never talks about eggs, the atlas, etc until you select it in the log. LIKE EVERY GAME EVER.
the game will always SUPER JANKY but I like it anyway. I can admit that. Some of y'all need to do the same, for real. You act like everything's perfect, it's disturbing really.
If it's a sin to like janky games, I'm going to hell eleventy-billion times over because every game I've ever played, much less liked, has had its jank to varying degrees.
I guess I just don't understand why some folks freak out over jank and then feel compelled to post walls of text about how ticked off they are. Like, blood pressure, my brothers in Christ. Think of your blood pressure. It's just a game. Chill out.
As for the OP: I tend to think it's kind of a bad idea to do expeditions without some experience under your belt and/or understanding the basics of the game. Or, if you are familiar with the basics of the game, perhaps the hyaline brain you're using is bugged somehow. Generally, you locate the hyaline brain in your suit inventory and activate it, and it points you to a nearby monolith where you transform the hyaline brain into a harmonic brain by interacting with the monolith. I've never had one that didn't do that. This is usually explained clearly and explicitly when you're following the regular-game quest to get your first Sentinel ship, but I don't know if that's so in the expedition since I don't play them.
As for the mission-switching: I've noticed in the post-update save I've been playing that the involuntary and unwelcome mission switching is greatly improved, even without manually cycling though them or "turning them off." Sure, it took them awhile to address this, but I think it switched so much to, for instance, help noobs know what they're supposed to do with the items they pick up, but it probably changed too often/quickly to help them much. So, better late than never, I say, but as I also said, I'm a chill person who doesn't freak out over little things, so...?
i just don't get that emotional about the 'jankiness' in games cos
1) if it's that bad that it upsets me, i'd just stop playing it
2) almost anything else can either be just accepted as the way that particular game works (for now)... or
3) i mod the cr@p out of it, with fixes, QoL changes, new features and/or 'total overhaul' mods [gasp]
NMS is nowhere near the most janky game i've ever played but it is my favourite game at the moment (for the last 4-5 years running)
the assumption a lot of you seem to be making is that the mission switching and/or hint/tips behaviour rises to the level of annoying or bad design for everyone, i understand it's a problem for some but for me it's just how the game works... can it be better... i think so, it's definitely better now after the 4.5 update
still the venting is good drama... great with a snack (and some decafe, which btw i highly recommend for the ranters... cos it's only a game!!!!), although some can be a little OTT... like 'throwing toys out of the pram' bad... those just leaves me thinking (and laughing) 'if it's that bad, why devote any more time to it?'
There's a very obvious and simple solution that countless games do: show multiple objectives at the same time. Problem solved. Why do they not get this.
That's the only 2 valid choices: show the active objective, or show them all. 'Cycling' is not a valid choice.
That's why ppl get annoyed, so much of the jank is from just bad decisions. And then add to that the bugs. Quests broken. Physics bugs. Audio bugs. Base building bugs. It's a lot.
Why give them a free pass? I consider HG redeemed and that they're good humans but also just bad devs. We should raise the standard we hold them to.
Who said I was giving them a free pass? The devs made a decision. I imagine there was lots of complaining from noobs along the lines of, "Duh, I got this thing and I don't understand what to do with it now." So they add a thing where when you get a new thing, a "tip" pops up about what to do with it. And I imagine they got complaints about "Duh, I started this mission, but I don't know what to do next." So, you get nagging about the Artemis quest, which unfortunately starts whether you want it to or not. Etc. But then, of course, you get the experienced players whining about being nagged. (And, yes, I find the mission-switching annoying, but since it doesn't take much effort to switch it back to the one I want -- even before the update -- I don't get my panties in a bunch about it because, as I said, I don't let little things bother me. And, for the record, nothing about a game is a big thing, to me. If I get frustrated, I just stop playing it and possibly uninstall. So far, I'm not that frustrated with NMS.)
So basically, it comes down to a decision: Do you help the noobs or do you stop the experienced players from whining? HG apparently decided to help the noobs. Do I agree with the decision? Not really, and I think they went into overkill to a point where they're probably confusing the noobs more than helping them. Am I going to whine about it? Nope. And, as I said, I have noticed great improvement in this regard since this last update. My save's been staying on the mission I picked even without touching the "H" key. Maybe it's "too little too late" for some folks, but I'm happy enough for now.
And also? I don't want my main screen flooded with objectives. That's what the log screen is for. You go there and look up what you need to do for any given mission. It's not hard to press the Esc key or whatever the equivalent is on a controller.
If it's not this, though, then OP missed something. The Hyaline Brain is not usable (to search for a nearby Monolith) until you have both Radiant Shard x3 and Inverted Mirror x1 in your inventory. The game will nag you to get these first before it makes the Hyaline Brain usable.
You're giving a free pass by holding them to such a low standard, that its not even worth criticizing.
It's great that things are so much to Your liking, unfortunately a huge amount of ppl - including in this thread - are not OK with the crappyness of certain things. Go figure.
What even is your point? That we shouldnt criticize the game? BC FYI that's what these forums are for. Criticism, exchange of ideas. The hint is in the name. This is a Discussion, nothing more.
you keep pushing that you're not happy, but seem unable to accept that others might not feel as you do without them being in some sort of state of denial... cos only you or someone who agrees with you are allowed to decide if any glitches/jankiness in a game rises to your definition of unacceptable?
Lol nothing to report sir just another NMS thread devolved into hostility bc some folks cant deal with simple criticism
