How do i build a corvette?

How do i start/initiate building a corvette please?

The Expedition that most likely will explain it all has not started yet. Give it a few days.

As to if and how you can access them today on the day the content was released I cannot say.

go to a space station enter one of the blue portals on your left when out of your ship and facing the 2 levels then open corvette building terminal and see the menu

I'm sure the Expedition will be an effective tutorial for Corvette building but for now, I've put screens here and in the 19GB update thread with a step by step.
Land in a Space Station.
Use the short range teleports on the left of the landing area near the station mission agent to get to the construction terminals.
Buy your parts (hint: you may want multiple quantities of some parts).
Start building. (hint, you need to start from the "ground" up, so the landing gear is the 1st part you need to build.

Corvette Workshop: Interresting when reviewing your inventory for the various parts of a Corvette... it does NOT filter out standard inventory items, at least not for me.

I'm guessing it works that way so we can sell inventory to raise coins to buy bits and pieces to build or enhance the Corvette. :-)

Is there a tutorial on how to build the first one or does the game just expect you to know how to build and design your own starship?

It's down on the flight deck. Go down there and look to the Rt. There will be four pads. Go to one and it will port you out to one of four build sites. Start to interact as noted above. There are already some early vids on how to. If you go slow and read exactly what game says it kind of walks you through it.
Be careful of placing stuff under the floor and if you finalize ship then go back and revamp it, for me anyway, any part I touch disappears, never to be seen again. Pain in the ass. Am sure it's something I'm doing but can't figure out what at this point. Only lost a few million in parts so far today. Sigh.

You can build a corvette in creative which will help you get used to how to get the ship you want without costing you tonnes of units 🤷🏻‍♂️
