Why I hate Steam Cloud
They always end up turning it back on. Went to play today, saw Syncing Cloud, quick hit stop. Too late. My full play through with nearly complete freighter, all quests finished, has just been replaced by a save from 2023.

AND MY PERSONAL BACKUP WAS CORRUPT!!!!!

Steam, you can lick my fuzzy coin purse.

Edited for correct year. Dumb fingers, lol.

Game released in 2016, so you might have another issue besides the horrible Steam cloud saves. Especially as you had (I assume) turned it off.

(edit: bit late now as yer backup got corrupted, but personally I occasionally put my save folder in a .zip and email it to myself.... might be worth trying in the future, especially if you manage to recover yer game)

Yeah they've been doing that lately. Usually what I set stays that way but it's happened before in the past where after some big steam client patch, for a while (for me) steam cloud and what window/view steam opens to changes to default every time I open Steam. I change them back, then next time I exit/close/re-open Steam client, they've reverted again.

Last time it happened it went away eventually, maybe with some other big steam client patch. Took a while tho.

The way I get around it is to always set Steam client to Offline Mode when done for a session, then hard-exit client - so when I open it again, it opens in Offline mode (where it won't notice/display any "game needs update" blue texts). If the cloud/other settings have been switched, I change them back, then turn on Online mode. Repeat.

As most (PC users i guess, not sure how console folks manage that) of us do local backups maybe that should be integrated as a feature in NMS or Steam, no?

I understand the idea of having fewer saves, but the risks are high. And read even devs recommanding to make a backup... why isn't it just integrated in the game?

I think Steam has a back up game files option, which might include saves. You can also view the save file location for games.

I'm one of those that manually backups files/folders via file explorer, not through Steam. To another drive. Sometimes multiple drives,

Console users can backup their saves, either to a stick drive or then to a desktop drive, whatever they want. But they don't have much control over specific save files/different kind of save system ofc, at least last I knew. May have changed tho.

The OP mentioned they had a backup but it was also corrupted somehow.

My guess as to how my backup got corrupted, When I did my last back up, I started it, wen to the bathroom, and windows was updating. Guessing micro$hit restarted before it finished. They can lick my fuzzy coin purse too.

Also manually backup through file explorer. That would also explain why some mods didn't work either, but redownloading them and they worked. Damned auto restart BS.
