Question about Relics expedition.
Ive had NMS since launch but have only played on and off over the years. I know the gist of gameplay.

My question: If I create a new save file with Relics and keep it, am I going to have to still do the steps to open up the new purple systems after it reverts to a regular save? Or am I going to keep my ship with the access to purple planets?

When you finish the expedition, the save will be converted to a normal save, with all your ships, multi-tools, suit expansions and inventory retained. If I remember right, you'll also keep access to the purple systems (I deleted my Relics start save to make space so I can't check to be sure).

You'll also keep any reputation gains you made with races or guilds, any words you learned and progress for various milestones. And of course, units, nanites and quicksilver.
Not sure, if you started Titan expedition as a new save file then you retained access to purple systems after, but will never be able to trigger Stellar Multitudes. Starting via the anomaly meant that you lost access to purple systems until/unless Stellar Multitudes was completed.

I've not heard if anyone tested to see if Relics functions the same or not...

So, to experience it with the least hicups I should just create a new perm save file as normal, and not use an expedition start as a perm save?

Actually, I think Shadow Strider has it right, above :steamthis:

Starting the expedition from a new save and you keep the drive and access to purples. Starting it from an existing save and you only keep the drive. Or at least, that's how it worked on Titan.

Sorry!

NO

YES

After the Relics expedition is complete your save converts to a "normal" (non-expedition) save. You retain everything you had during the expedition including access to purple systems.

The game also starts both the Atlas Path and the Artemis story lines once it converts. So it's like starting a new save and getting free access to Purple systems right off the bat.

Starting a new save in an expeditions grants you any benefit from that expedition on that file, such as, access to the purple star systems. This can also include things like access to quicksilver items or previous expedition rewards that you have yet to unlock.

If you do the expedition from a regular save however, any rewards you get from regular milestones do NOT carry over to your main file. So, in this case, the free purple star system unlock would NOT carry over, but if your engine is installed and you claim your ship on the other side, it will still be in the ship, despite not having access to purple systems yet.

You also can not cheat the system with expedition bases, however as far as I know you don't lose them. Again, they will remain hidden until you unlock purple systems, but they should become available once you do. (I'm not looking forward to that list on my current file lol)

Yes, this works exactly the same as it did in Titan (although I am only assuming it will be the same for the absence of In Stellar Multitudes).
Here's a galaxy map with Artemis' initial coordinates active, with the Purple systems visible, in a new save that has only done Relics (still using the Relics starter Explorer).
