Unless the ship attempts to communicate with you when you are beside it or something instead, then the only thing you can do is abandon the mission
The first frigate you pick when sending them out is the defacto 'leader' & anytime those worthless idiots get stuck, that's the ship that's going to report to you. Always pick a "normal" frigate for that position if you want to participate in those side quests. Otherwise, you can do what I do, tell them to ♥♥♥♥ off, put on their big girl panties & figure it out for themselves.
Since you already sent the group out with a living leader, you can't complete the mission regardless of what you do. The mistake was made when you selected the first frigate & can't be reversed at this point.
another example is adding four C-Class Frigates to the list first... then send them out with the Leviathan or the Normandy selected last... either L or N are the expedition leader every time i do this... makes sense, too... the highest rank is the leader in the military, too... if two have the same rank, the one with the longest time in service has the command...
That's how it always works for me. I made the exact same mistake by selecting the Normandy first. As long as I don't select the Normandy, The Damned, a living frigate, etc, first, there's never been a problem & it always gives my first selected the leadership role.
I probably tend to fill the slots by descending rank - I doubt I've ever selected C, C, C, C, S, so I can't say I've tried every combo. Most missions can be done with 1 or 2 S-class frigates by themselves, so I fill out the mission for success first, then fill in the last slots just to give the lesser class ships experience since they're not actually needed for the mission.
That being said, I haven't sent them out at all in ages, because, for me, they're completely useless. I have problems spending money, not earning it.
