Fishing lol no
Done even trying to play this expedition. The fishing is totally stupid and will never play another expedition with fishing in it even if the prize is real world money. Who came up with this awful idea?

I am sorry you don't enjoy that mechanic. there are other uses for fish besides selling them if that helps making fishing a little more tolerable. Some food dishes can boost scanning rewards by thousands giving you a lot of money. Also I think I read somewhere you can get unique helmets from fishing but I'm not sure how.
With having to jump through hoops just to get the game to run at 60 fps after every update lately and being nothing more than a self aware NPC in a world with no real story being fed stupid things to do to get your mind off it. the fishing just pushed me over the edge. I am probably done with this game for a while, a long while. This has just turned me off and I have no hope or interest in their new fire game now. These are just the ravings of a old man.

I didn't have to jump though any hoops to get this game to run at 60 FPS, because I'm playing at 240 FPS.

Fishing in that expedition is the most basic there is. previous rewards give you the fishing rig and bionic lures. Frankly expedition relics is very very light on the fishing side. It can be done in 5 minutes right in the last meeting point system

Just equip your starship with aquajets, Find the ocean planet and choose a spot away from any coast (50u or more deep)
"land" your ship there, Exit on top of it, select the bionic lures and wait for the night.
In less than 5 minutes you will fish what is required.

You can even toggle autofishing in the settings to make things easier.

Fishing you can either sell the fish, cook it for use in your nutrient processor, or go into the water and release it for hefty amounts of nanites.

Can you precise what you dislike in the fishing mechanic? Seems pretty straightforward to me.

It's not fishing. Not even close to fishing. Drop the lure in wait for fish to hook self reel in lol not fishing. And how in any way does this link to the relic theme? Like i said self aware NPC being fed stupid irrelevant things to do to fill time. More ravings of an old man sorry if I upset you.
Other than the RNG aspect when you have a goal to meet, I enjoy the fishing. It is a fun activity when you just want to zone out and relax. Seems like most of time I end up fishing in a storm which is neat to watch and creates interesting minor complexities to fishing.

I agree that my luck on this expedition was probably in the lowest ranks. Took me about three hours and 59 fish to finally get the win. Waiting to dark was probably the advantage I did not worry about or it probably would have gone a lot quicker.

And maybe that is part of the problem for you OP, the fishing is super simple and amounts to pulling puzzle piece out a bag until you find the right one. Feels a little cheap right now but maybe they will refine it to make the actual process feel a little more skillful.

Fishing is one of the best, least stressful ways to run up your nanite balance, in addition to whatever the immediate mission goal is.

In fact, because of the nanite benefits, I almost never fish with lures, just so I will end up having to pull in A LOT of fish in the course of completing a goal.

Release all the extra fish for nanite rewards.

I did not realize we got nanites. I did release all the C class fish after my trial, but never picked up on the nanite reward.

I only did fishing during expedition. In my main save, i did not bother to fishing.
if i caught some S tier, i will brought back to main save to complete my collection and recipe

Fishing x 1 specific catch for a reasonably high value reward + incidental nanite bonus- OK
Picking up animal scat x 20 for irrelevant reward - Grrr.

It is about on the level with the rewards from offering dishes to Cronos...but much quicker, all told.

I enjoy fishing. Fishing unlocks the *fish helmets*, there are five of them, each requires a certain goal of fishing. One is catching a child of Aquarius and release it in water to get the boss fight. Win, and you get the that fishing helmet. Cooking ties in with fish. Fish make bait in increasing chance of rare/large fish, food recipes which fish give for protection, analysis extra units for flora/fauna etc.etc.etc.,you can put the fish in a wonder display and show off the fish, i could go on and on. Its also a relaxing *money* maker.

Pretty sure this has not changed, but fishing in Expeditions does not count for the unlocks when back in a main save unless the Expedition was started as a new save and converted to normal at the end..
there's a ton of different things you can do in NMS, but much of it you don't have to and there's no reason to do so beyond the sheer enjoyment of burying yourself in some chill busywork. I don't know that NMS has ever been anything more than that. The entire main story is pretty much an extended tutorial. I can understand not finding the fishing all that enjoyable, but I just don't understand how THAT out of everything in the game or this expedition, became the straw that broke the camel's back when the game has never really hid what it was about all this time.

I haven't done the Expedition (sounds monotonous, if one's rng luck is bad) but I was kinda meh re: the fishing feature. I mean it's ok, but it doesn't have any mechanics. I ended up putting it on auto-catch so I don't even have to click. And I rarely fish. I don't do much re: cooking/foods. The one simple recipe (non-fish) for nutrient ingestor early-mid game is nice for units but other than that.

It is a serene thing to do when you just want to enjoy the scenery, get a nice screenshot. That's about it, for me.
