Cannot talk to NPC at Digsite I

First time I visited digsite I, the ground is gone underneath the NPC, and under the area to dig. The NPC is floating in the air, I cannot interact with them, the quest marker is pointing to a blank space nearby. I tried waiting hours and reloading to regen the terrain but I logged back in a few days later and its the same. No amount of jumping or trying to get close allows me to talk to the NPC. What do I do now? I cannot complete the expedition without talking to them.

1. Turn off multiplayer and reload your restore point as you got out of your ship.
2. Use the terrain manipulator "create" mode (use MMB to change modes) to add terrain under the NPC.

Note that the removed terrain was unlikely to be malicious. Several people reported the NPC buried and they needed to dig them out to talk to them.

I heard that someone plantd an avian display next to him and it prevented interaction. So a suggestion was to dig around him. Hope you figure it out!

I had the same issue, turning off network, going offline on steam did not resolve. I finally used the terrain tool to rebuild the ground out to the NPC.

I ended up building the ground back with the terrain tool in create mode and I was able to talk to the NPC! Thank you everyone for telling me that.

I couldn't find the NPC at dig site 2 last night. It looked like it had been attacked by pirates. Eventually, he came back.
