Bone Fish?
I went to three of the bases claiming to be a bone fish spot. I caught 2 Toxic Bone Fish at one of them but it did not qualify. Is there another Bone Fish available at the third system toxic world? I gave up after about 20 catches.

The two qualifying fish are:
Toxic biome specific large legendary Bleached Bonefish
All biome large uncommon nocturnal Whispering Bonefish

45-50u on a toxic planet at night gives the best odds of catching both.

Getting to a toxic fishing spot is the easy part. The qualifying factor appears to be the depth meter on the LR of the screen must be over 60 u. The quest description in the log submenu says as much, but who reads those?

I also stopped at a couple "fishing" bases in the expedition, and their comm notes usually said something like, "fish in the center, it's over 60 u", or some such note. However, when I cast my fishing line, the LR depth meter would inevitably indicate 4 u to 30 u, and I would waste a ton of bait at those spots. I eventually got down to my last 5 free bait samples so I swam out deeper in the sea, not near the shore, set up my skiff, and checked the depth meter: 61 u. Within two throws, I had a qualifying bonefish. The depth meter matters a lot based on my experience.

Different save not in Expedition: Tangy Cheese (cause I had it) Nocturnal same stats and less processing than Smurfy's softened marrow.

Huh?
1 Bone = 1 Softened Marrow
That's 1 cooking step.

Tangy Cheese needs two ingredients (so already "more processing") and Cream and Yeast both need to be produced by a previous cooking processing step.

All good, It took me longer to type my reply than it took you to edit the error.
I was multitasking.
Between starting the reply before your edit (I had to double-check the recipe) and submitting it, then noticing an attempted cut & pasted "both" was missing from the last sentence and editing mine 3 minutes later, I didn't notice your edit at all, My bad.
Interesting scenario in the current Exp18 run.

Was on radioactive planet Noha 39/W6 in Rendezvous 4 system fishing in 40-50u.

Caught a bonefish at around 4am with no bait... but my inventory was full (I forgot to empty the other dud fish I had caught between 7pm and 4am) but it still passed the milestone, even though I didn't get the fish in my inventory.
been stuck on this mission for about 2 days now, it's just broken by things like the way your exoskiff just flips over every 2 minutes - impossible to fish for the damn thing.
15 minutes later I try again and viola, got my bone fish. how random is that. :-)
On Ligart Prime. Fished in 55u and 90u waters. Caught 92 fish. NONE of them are bonefish.
I don't use the skiff because it's useless. I just stand on my ship. I went to a waterworld and used shadow lures at a depth of about 800U. I got the bone fish within a few casts.
The Skiff is just bad. It needs to actually hover (just change height) and its hazard free spot is way too small.
Yeah, 100% agree, the only thing the skiff is useful for is the extra storage, beyond that it's a waste of space... it'd take a rodeo champion to even stand on that thing in rough weather, buy given you can move at all while fishing then you have no hope of staying on the thing while you're line is cast
As far as the Whispering Bone fishing trial goes I found one of the pillars with the middle hollowed out that was ~70u deep and used the terrain tool to make a hole in the inside above the water level to avoid poison environment. As soon as it got dark fished for 3 nights.
The switch lost discovery service and bam first cast whispering bone fish. No bait and 60 fish/boots/coral/grass/sponges in inventory. I guess I am lucky the service dropped or I would still be there trying to get the fish :)
In my experience, the ideal depth for large fish is actually around 30-40 u deep. Once you hit a depth of 50 u then you'll start finding more colossal fish than large ones...

Similar experience: only caught the whispering bonefish after I turned off/went into steam offline mode. Before:5 hours of futile fishing of having tried absolutely everything.

I still don't believe in this alleged safe spot. I've inched all over that stupid raft & not once have I found shelter.

It exists (or at least it used to), but it's so tiny a space that it might as well not... it's right in the very centre, but if the skiff isn't perfectly level then at least part of you wont be in the safe zone.
