The dig site 3 does not appear.
Hi. I am doing phase 3, stage 2 of the expedition in PS5, looking for the completed fossil to give to the manager. The problem is that when I logged in today, dig sites 4 and 5 were already completed, without me getting there. Now I don't see dig site 3 on the map to go and drop off the completed fossil. Has anyone else had this happen to me, any solutions? Thanks

Same here. You can store bones in storage and that will make you to track it again, but once you get all pieces- poof its gone again without completion. Also completion of all dig sites without finding them is annoying af, but probably you can complete expedition without them

You may have misunderstood the suggestion.
Each Dig Site is used for 2 milestones in every phase.
The Dig I-V are the "Reach the site and talk to the rep", milestones that you have probably auto-completed.
Then you have to return to each of them with a full set of bones.
If you collect 5 full sets of bones, activating each Field Agent "return the bones" milestone in your log should hopefully mark a waypoint path to locate the site in sequence.

I'm also curious to get some more detail from you if you don't mind, I'm trying to establish how the milestones get autocompleted. My theory is it is a multiplayer group issue, when you join a group with a player who has already ticked them all off, yours get ticked off too.

Thanks for the info, not particularly helpful for my hypothesis, but may be useful in narrowing down a cause.

As for the full bone sets, RNGeebus may not be playing kindly with you.
Each set requires 5 parts
  1. Skull
  2. Torso (ribs)
  3. Forelimbs/Arms/Wings
  4. Hindlimbs/Legs
  5. Tail
I haven't paid close enough attention to know whether the limbs are interchangeable, and you just need 2 sets of limbs, or whether there are some limbs that only fit in one or the other slot.

On screen tells you what you have and what's missing.

/edit2/
I should also point out that the bones need to be in an open inventory (Suit/Active Ship) to be counted. Inactive Starship, Base Storage Containers, Nutrient Processor's ingredient store, Personal Refiner input all "hide" them from the mission counter.

Dig Site marked (this is the bit that I don't know whether it will work in the auto-completed Dig Site scenario):

Hi smurfy.

1. The mission 2 of part 3, asks to find a complete fossil to then deliver it to the foreman. The problem is that when I manage to get the complete fossil, the mission detects it but does not show me the manager icon (digging point) to go and deliver it. I watched a Youtube video of a streamer and managed to find the coordinates. I got to the location but the NPC does not give me the option to deliver the fossil. It's a normal NPC, with language options and gifts.
2. On the other hand, the following excavation points that I still do not visit, already appear visited and the achievement delivered. Maybe the problem is due to this. Now I don't know how to get to them. I would have to watch a video on Youtube looking at how someone else gets to those places and look at the coordinates.

Greetings.

As I highlight above, I had my doubts that it would just work so simply.
This player also reports that just getting the full set (assuming they have a full set) doesn't mark a delivery point for them.
This is a similar scenario to Exp 17 when these autocompleted milestones also happened. HG applied a patch back then to supposedly help out in those situations but as far as I know, nobody reported that it successfully fixed the issue for them.
There is a brute force workaround that involves manually setting those milestones to Optional so the Expedition Phase can be completed without them, but I'd rather explore all options before recommending it this time.

That other post seems to validate my multiplayer theory that may be able to replicate the issue, so I'm going to try that later today and see if I can get a save file with the problem so I can do some troubleshooting myself.
I'm on PC (Steam) and I have the same issue. I was not playing in multi-player at the time, but it did happen after the first big update/bug fix to Relics. I did switch over to multi-player in an attempt to try and find if anyone had a base at the rendezvous location, but couldn't find any. I also tried manually looking for the system on the galaxy map after finding out what it was named, and that is pointless, simply too many systems to hunt through.

Manually getting to the dig site (however you achieve it) won't help, unfortunately.

I haven't been able to replicate the issue yet.

Are you using any mods (no matter how minor or seemingly unrelated)?

Thanks for the reply,
Negative, no mods, just the vanilla game. As you were saying in the above post/s, this also happened last Expedition, so if it's something they don't fix, then I copied my old save game and I will just redo it before the end date and hope it works then.

I have the same issue as you describe, on PC. Tried the same things with no luck. I'll keep looking for an answer too. I hope we find something soon, this is very frustrating.

Same issue, vanilla NMS. Logged in after a quick session the day before and suddenly dig site 3,4,5 completed as described by op. Now stuck.

One thing i heared may help: switch multiplayer off in the NMS-options after leaving the digsite, (and / or restart the game) and then enter the digsite again with multiplayer off, may help.

Edit: after restart of the game client and switched off multiplayer, i dug out another set and then suddenly i got the marker for digsite 2. Maybe it helps to set up the display again, but better wait to build it up, build it up at the digsite first to get the achievement, good luck !

I attempted various client restarts with multiplayer on and off, and deleted all my fossils and completed skeletons and it said to get 1 skull, 1 torso etc. So i did thinking I made some progress, but alas, after finding the skull for my full set, no waypoint to hand them in.

Your problem was different and user-created. There are three steps that complete each of the three phase milestones.
  1. Reach the dig site and talk to the rep = 1 milestone
  2. Collect a full set of bones and report back to the dig site = 2nd milestone
  3. Assemble the bones into a display fossil = 3rd milestone
The bug is the 1st one gets autocompleted without ever reaching that site.
You did #3 before finishing #2, so you had to do #2 again (because you no longer had a full set of unassembled bones).

Have the same problem at Phase 2, Phase 1 worked . Cannot "collect a complete fossil". I flew to another system because collecting bones was easier there, distances between the bones was not that far there, then i planted up a showcase and built the complete skeleton, got the "reassembled a complete biped"-milestone, but now i try to return to the camp and don't find it anymore, no marker and the quest is still saying, i have to collect a tail..while the completed pre-assembled fossil display is sitting in my inventory.
I even tried to use the signal booster, to find the geology camp again, did not help
You can pre-collect 5 full sets of bones and carry them around and complete #1 and #2 almost simultaneously, but if the game bug occurs and #1 is done without you ever visiting the site, you're screwed and can never get a waypoint marker to do milestone 2.

Same problem here.... (GoG version, PC, SoloPlayer)...
