DIG III is just terrible.
I saved the game, went back to the opening screen and reloaded the data.
He confirmed that he had returned to the ground. He was shaking badly at this point.
It seemed like he was able to move, so I chased after him while returning the terrain to its original position.
He stopped shaking and we were able to have a conversation.
Was I lucky?
Even with multiplayer disabled the poor Gek paleontologist was up to their ankles in the snow during the blizzard. But easily interacted with no issues:

Top option is MP on or off. The change takes effect immediately but you may want to load a save at a different location (e.g. the Space Station or Anomaly) and then return to the dig site (put down a save beacon first otherwise you may not get a mission marker - I have not checked whether it will persist after you have arrived at the site but not talked to the Gek).
