Out of target sweep, back to scanner
I'm a new player doing the expedition. I just completed the first phase in which I used target sweep. Can someone please tell me how to get back to the regular scanner now?

Learn the appropriate buttons for everything in Options → Controls → Remap Controls.
While using your Visor (holding down the "F" button) press either "3" or "1" to change modes.

I appreciate you taking the time to reply. I do know how to remap my buttons and I've tried the 3 and 1 to change mode but it still stays in the target sweep screen and doesn't go back to what it was before. Thank you anyway. :)

And if you're using a controller, then it should be left/right on the trackpad while holding the scan button (L2/LT)

Whether target sweep triggers when activating scan usually depends on which mission is currently active in the log. If the mission has a "find X" objective then it's likely to trigger target sweep. Changing the focussed mission to something else, even while still pursuing the mission objectives, should stop target sweep from activating.

Thanks, I'm on pc. :)

Thanks! I went and found the wheat it was directing me to and now it appears to be working. Thank you both! This game is kind of confusing sometimes. :P

if your mission to use it is not finished then it will keep switching back to that mode.

Not if the game decided to change your active mission.... (That's a problem which is guaranteed to confound new players, because, OBVIOUSLY)

As noted, the problem you are having is that as far as the game is concerned, you are not done using the scanner. Could be a new auto-selected mission, or maybe you never let it finish the final scan when you reached the location.

If it is one of the ancient bones type missions, it just keeps being annoying until you finally get enough to qualify the mission as done.

Good luck, it will eventually go away. Have to say, it is one of the most annoying features in the game and no realistic way to turn it off. You can stop it for a bit by switching to 1-regular scan but the second you drop out of that scan, its back.

Personally i like that it keeps switching back to target scanner - it keeps me focused on the mission at hand, and is especially handy to let me know the game has secretly changed the active mission, because the target scanner stops turning on.

But its really only good for finding rendezvous sites, beyond that, its pretty useless, but especially useless for finding ancient bones.

I'd argue that it's only barely useful for that in some cases. I've commonly found it leading me around in a circle before finally homing in on where it wants me to go, and if you've got a long way to go to a target then there's no easy way to place a marker to allow you to use exocraft or ship to get there quicker (or for hazard protection).

Agree 100%, I hate the way it keeps trying to point me back to the bone site I just finished digging up rather than leading me to the next one.

It works OK for some other targets (e.g. armoured clams).

When it comes to finding rendezvous sites and such, I usually don't land my ship until after I've located the POI... I find it much faster to hover in the air and look around than to run around on the surface

Also, when it comes to locating anything with multiple options (like clams, bones, etc.) I find that it never directs me to the closest option, so I always ignore the suggested target anyway

I first get an idea of the direction and distance, then i press F, !, and find any random object in the general direction and target it E.... the rendezvous is often further than i can find an object (750U cap) So i often have to make another stop on the way.

Of course gauging the specific direction is always interesting when the direction arrows have got near 180 degree dead zone, which is kind of absurd for supposedly space age technology.

This is why I search using my ship, it has greater visibility and scan range. Even though you don't know what direction to search from the marker, the POI will always be within ~1000u, so you can just circle around until you spot it.
