runs smooth when running, but then crashes with a message and returns to desktop.
I just a 30min session, then the crash, other times it will crash in less than a minute
access violation - code c0000005 (first/second chance not available)
This seems to indicate some memory instability. I have disabled EXPO and trying again
For the crashes, have you tried verifying the integrity of files in Steam?
It is recommended to check your Bios QVL to know what memories have been tested with it, but even then you could just have been unlucky in the silicon lottery and you might have to disable overclocking or even underclock it to keep your system stable.
Restart your PC and make sure this folder is gone : C:\ProgramData\obs-studio-hook
Next disable in Steam GAME RECORDING
Same for Nvidia App .. disable in Settings all Overlays
Thanks for the tips, much appreciated.
I never installed OBS, but looks like it came with riva tuner(MSI after burner) at some point, removed all evidence of both and restarted.
Steam recording was already off.
Nvidia app has never been installed, just drivers and control center.
I don't have any other screen recorders installed that I know of.
After all this, it still crashed the same way after a few mins, heres the dmp:

My RAM kit was on the QVL list and is just 6000CL30, which I have currently running at non EXPO speeds, 4800CL40 just to eliminate it as a factor.
I know that MSI Afterburner makes sometimes problem
Could you post the content of your TKGRAPHICSSETTINGS.MXML (just open it with notepad and copy&paste it)
That file is in \steamapps\common\No Man's Sky\Binaries\Settings
Merry Christmas!

Easy thing to check, turn off your DOCP or XMP profile and see if the crashes continue. If they don't, you had your RAM up too high. Not all configurations can achieve rated speeds.
Nothing wrong with your settings...
You may do a clean GPU driver installation ... including the NVIDIA App .. that doesnt make trouble.. have it always installed but disabled all Overlays...
https://nvidia.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/10/~/geforce-experience-driver-installation-failed.-how-do-i-manually-clean-install
It’s a 1300w platinum rated PSU that happily supplies 1kw in other games, this game when running is only 400w total.
I also suspected RAM, so turned off EXPO so it runs slow, no difference, still crashes.
I tried a clean install of drivers already, last thing I can try is ddu install I suspose.
I even tried running it in default graphics settings which is really low resolution etc and it still crashed
