Advice For playing In VR? (Graphical Settings/launch issues)
Greetings everyone. Not too often i come asking for advice on the Steam forums now a days. Hoping there's maybe a few friends here who might've had a similar situation as i am having right now.

So For any tech info? I've got my PC specs in my profile. I do need to update the Motherboard to an Asus Rog Crosshair VIII Hero which i'll probably have done by the time I've finished this post.

But basically i'm running a pretty decent DDR4 era AMD CPU. Powers through most things before ever becoming an actual bottleneck. That would be my current 3060ti creating bottlenecks with its low V-Ram of only 8gb. Purchased it early into the next generation and honestly, I had no idea how important V-Ram would become compared to the PS4/Series X Generation of titles. For about a decade 6gb was more than enough so i thought why not go with the higher clock speeds but cut to V-ram? (8GB)

Of course i'm looking into a 5070ti this time round and have some savings ready for launch day - great right? Well We don't know if the stock will be there by the end of this month. It might be May until i can find one i'm willing to pay for judging off the 5080 paper launch.

So my issue? On a 4K panel i can run this game really happy with a balanced DLSS profile, When it comes to more demanding titles i've set up custom resolutions like 1620p and other common popular scaling resolutions. Happy to upsample until i've found a viable 50 series or use my 120hrz 1440p panel instead.

I love VR since getting into it a year ago or so. Bought a Quest 2 real cheap as the 3 was just about to come out. I can play HL Alyx with no issues at all using a hardline link. I've got a nice 5M cable that also has an extra Type C port for plugging in additional power so it can't really die on me for long sessions. I'll spend 2 hours in Walkabout VR quite happily!

Dirt 2 was a Rally game i've picked up and enjoyed in VR quite a fair bit on both 2D & VR so also no issues on that front but for some reason? NMS just lags lags lags and eventually crashes out. I honestly haven't got a clue how the devs got this working on the old PSVR1 so i was expecting it to be rather flawless! Oh and i should mention i'll run any VR title off one of my 980 Samsung NVME drives for the best loading performance. I've also recently done a fresh reset of Windows 11.

I'll get to the loading screen and it'l be a good 5 minutes of a laggy experience watching stars go by. Usually just tilt the headset up while this process happens and once i load up my save files finally? It just seems to hang and eventually crash. Loading up on my 4K panel it'l happily boot up after another laggy load but its a flawless frame-rate in the space station once i've loaded in. I have a smaller 1440p panel for 120hrz competitive gaming and i'll even hit 120fps in this space station i'm currently residing in so i'm not entirely sure whats causing it to act out as harshly as i have seen it. Perhaps try putting everything on Low and raising settings up as i go?

I'll continue to test it out this evening but i appreciate if anyone has had this same experience as me and managed to resolve it. Say by starting a new save instead of loading an old one etc. Then please feel free to help out. I'll happily reward your time with point awards <3

[EDIT'S POSTED HERE]

Edit 1: Noticed a new glitch now i've got the FPS counter enabled in steam. It won't go any higher than 50fps despite having V-sync turned off and can see some minor tearing. Somehow the game has decided to internally lock itself to 50fps. I'm running the 4k panel at 60hrz.

V-sync is off too. Very strange...It should be going to to the unlocked 90fps limit i've put on the options menu.

Umm forgotten how to include photos in posts it's been years since i've asked for help lol. but its just a screenshot to validate that yeah its stuck at 50fps at 1620p. I've checked my nvidia control panel and i haven't any options like capping the fps to 50. If i ever do cap a frame rate its an adaptive 30fps i set for the most consistent frame time.

Weird because i remember running this on Ultra at beyond 60. i'll switch back and forth between 2D and VR.

Unfortunately, the VR in this game is just poorly optimized. After the semi-recent graphical update, VR performance was shoved aside and and forgotten about. The game used to be playable in VR even with my old 1080 Ti, now it struggles even with my new 4070 Ti Super.

*I should note, this is even with all the graphical settings on the lowest possible settings.

Ah dude. That absolutely sucks to hear! I wont spend too much time on trying to resolve this.

Yeah i could swear the first time i tested out my 3060ti with this game it achieved 60fps on mostly a mix of ultra and high settings and the only place i had a problem was the hub where people meet from online dropping to the 40's. By the time i'd picked up VR it seems i've kinda lost my chance to enjoy it in full 3D!

That's really surprising. Especially from an all Low perspective? A 4070ti Super should absolutely destroy this game! Ugh. Terrible news for you to bring me but i thank you still none the less. Least i won't lose my sanity! Enjoy the 800 Points friend! :SF6_Delta_Cat:

5 minutes on NVMe?... This is too long, it shouldn't be like this. Me too NVMe, but I never waited more than a minute and a half before, and with the latest update, loading takes exactly thirty seconds.
What are your graphics settings in Meta Link? Set it to Auto, for starters, and don't touch it.
Adjust the graphics in the game, first of all, set all the settings to medium, and the texture quality and landscape tessellation to minimum. Then I would also advise you to reduce the water quality.
Turn off GTAO and turn on DLSS, set the balanced mode.
And of course, 120 frames is too much for this game, do not make more than 90. Forget about the Nvidia panel, it is absolutely not needed for VR.

I would also advise you to buy the Virtual Desktop program, since Meta Link is very wasteful in using video memory. But Virtual Desktop needs a good router, since it does not work via cable. But it's worth it, I haven't used a cable and Meta Link for two years now.
You can try Steam Link, but it works faster, but the quality will not be very good.
I have a 3070 card, it also has 8 GB, and with certain settings it copes with the game quite well.

Sorry for the telegraphic style, but the description of the Meta Quest graphics settings takes up about eight volumes of small print )

The 1080Ti card is still pretty good for VR. And on the 4070TiS, you can play this game very comfortably, with graphics settings above average, and some at maximum.

I wish that were the case, but NMS simply doesn't run well in VR anymore. Most other games run very well in VR, especially after the graphics card upgrade, but this game refuses to go above 70 FPS in VR, usually hovering around 30 with everything on the lowest possible setting. To be fair, it's better than the 1080Ti fared in VR after the graphical update. With the 1080TI immediately after the update, the game sat at a solid 3 FPS (not joking) in VR.

This is very strange. I've been playing it for three years now and haven't noticed any particular problems. And yes, after updates the game sometimes lags, but maybe it's because of shader recaching, and sometimes I just deleted it and reinstalled it.

It seemed to me that the latest update significantly improved the graphics, but overall you're right - the game is not very well optimized for VR...

On the other hand, after playing it in VR, you will never play the flat version. The immersion is incredible.

NMS in VR is really chill, just fly around and admire the scenery...

I found that was the case before I bought a new PC But even so it was slightly glitch y but 3 days ago I saw the new worlds 2 update and I hopped in - And its running butter smooth all sets max as they go - The last time I played the giant worms were more graphical than a thing , the experience flying in from space was smooth and it felt like what I saw comming in before entry was actual what I got as I came to the ground - butter smooth Frame rates and transition visual from space to ground, Um the worm den and killing the worms in VR wow
Might just be your PC and or graphics board

hey friend, what are your pc specs and your vr setup?
im on quest 3 using link cable with a 3060 and 5500 and it runs like hot garbo.
fligmin Feb 4 @ 8:03am
quest 2
4070 ti
win 11
AMD Ryzen 7 7700 8-Core Processor 3.80 GHz
64.0 GB (63.1 GB usable)

In game every
graphics setting to max and runs butter smooth

Processor can go up to 5. something overclocking Techi told me when I asked to overclock it that it would speed up under load (not sure if I believe or if wife convinced him to say that and not over clock it - she hates that stuff)

Using link cable

I can't even get into the game cos once I get onto the screen the controller buttons simply don't work. Nothing I do fixes it and nobody cares. I even helped one guy with his Vr issues and he didn't even get back to helping me.

So I guess I'm done for a while. I have tried every thing save reformatting my entire pc and I'm not doing that.

best thing ive found out was lowering your desktop resolution for the game running on your monitor. *found a program called sizer*

It's pretty hard to help without any information about the problem and the results of your attempts to solve it...
Computer configuration? What screen are we talking about? What about other games? What VR headset? What VR streaming software are you using? And so on...

I think something is not right in your system to have those sorts of issues, I have not played NMS on flat screen for at least 2 years probably more. I7 6700K at 4.3GHz, 16Gb DDR4, RTX3080, Win 10 with a Pico 4 using Virtual Desktop. Never had any big issues with it, all game settings at high with a few at Ultra, DLSS and Balanced never have Multiplayer on though, never have apart from one Exped mission that required it. Framerate seems rock steady and smooth to me. It is easy to see slow frames and stutters etc when you get them in games.

If there is, it's strange that it only affects this game, and only in VR. I've never found any way to make this game run better in VR outside of waiting for optimizations.

Just for clarity's sake:
Valve Index
MSI PRO B760-P WIFI DDR4
NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 Ti SUPER
12th Gen Intel Core i5-12600KF
64 GB RAM

Like I said, after the graphics card switch from 1080ti to 4070ti Super, the game is "playable" in VR, but still runs like trash with everything on low.
