I have been tweaking my fleet for a very long time now, and what i eventually realized, is all i need are organic and support frigates, plus a couple of specials from expeditions.... and i'm even thinking of getting rid of some of those.
From leveling up organic frigates above 55 expeditions, i discovered that, they can have a main ability (combat, science, industry and trade) that is equal to any of the best specialized frigates, plus you can re roll these ability scores with food.
So i am working towards having 10 organic frigates, that means 2 on every mission
and 15 support frigates which means 3 on every mission
And pretty much have close to zero fuel costs across the board.
Edit: here is another point.... it is really hard to find S class frigates, but finding S class organics is as simple as looking at Youtube for glyphs.... so you can potentially get a powerful fleet really early in the game so long as you have the money to buy them.
Support frigates, essentially just reduces the cost of fuel consumption, AFAIK. That's why I've always found more useful having the other ones in the roaster. But this is a bit of an outdated statement on my part. Last I played actively, was Interceptor update.
As side note, in the past, I forgot to mention, I used to have a few extra explorers taking the spot of support ones. That was, to scan new systems from freighter frigates, but I always made a rare use of it. Even the less, since the introduction of system scan from freighter room.
With that said, are now support frigates doing anything else besides that?
As side note, I just found out it has been added rescue mission for frigates! Nice addition, me likey :D
I beg to differ. Mission have specialized tasks.
Example - On a trading mission I would send 2x trader, 1x explorer, 1 combat, 1 industry. In this way, you compensate the stats of the 2x traders in the other compartments. This, for at least was the recommended set up years ago, by so called Guru's of Frigate missions.
Yes, stats and ranks, consequently influence the outcome of the missions, and the efficiency of the feet. No question about it.
By my side, I don't mind starting with C class frigates, as it will level up rank over time. Moreover, i prefer a low rank starting fleet for being affordable. In my last saves, I made the fleet one of my main source of income (plant farm is overpowered, spoils the fun).
EDIT:
About Organic ones, yes they are kinda OP, and that's one part I don't like much. I like to see my progress, instead of getting S ranks like that. The reroll stats mechanic is an interesting Idea, but idk... I just prefer the other kind of frigates lately.
EDIT 2
About fuel... Tritium and the Jelly cost peanuts at space stations trade termina. I mean, with less than a couple 100k units In got 100 jelly and 2-3k tritium. Why bother with fuel reduction frigates? Again, unless they add something else to the stats I'm not aware of, I can't see a good reason to have any of it.
I'm down to just 1 combat vessel, and honestly see little reason to keep it other than so far i had worse ships to get rid off and have not gotten to it yet.
Even when i had a normal fleet, its hard to manage any specific fleet arrangements when one day the navigator gives you 3 explore missions at 3 star and the next 3 trade missions.... you just don't have enough ships to cope with this kind of massive variability... this is what makes support ships so good, because they can better cope with this variability with their relatively balanced stats.
C class frigates are not just the obvious choice because they are cheap, but because its pretty dam hard to find anything OTHER than c class.... so if i was starting a new game, i would be trading illegal goods and stocking up on Tritium at the same time while checking pirate systems for C class support frigates and then start buying S class organics as soon as i have the money.
The issue with fuel is TIME.... You can have all the money in the universe, all the hotspot mines for every imaginable resource, but none of it staves off the tedious buying or harvesting of Tritium, you just cannot get around it, EXCEPT by using less of it.
Here is how I always did it ( especially after the nerf of Hydrogen jelly on Refiners).
1) Head to a space station T3 (3 star system economy)
2) Most of ST have D Hydrogen jelly for sale. 100 DJ is about 50k units
3) Buy Tritium on the same spot from landed pilots at ST. roughly they stack 500-600 for a cost 6, 7k units. And I'm playing on maxed difficulty.
In 5 minutes I stacked up 5k+ tritium and 100 Jelly. So, I don't see the fuel problem, really. Besides, if you make it a habit, when you exploring around and bump into NPC store I always buy some in advance even if I don't need it right away.
Like I said earlier, fuel for frigate cost peanuts in term of time and economy.
That's why I can't see a good reason to keep spots for support ones. As you mentioned, some missions happens to be 3x of the same kind and 3x of the other. That's how I manage to fulfill that, optimised as possible. Besides, there are no support missions, but only those other classes.
My game is quite advanced, and no matter how much tritium i thought i had, it always eventually gets sucked dry, and i'm tired of it, seriously. I got more money and resources than i could ever need, every type of hotspot tapped, all my tech is top notch, so i got no reason to trade, but for tritium, always tritium.... so why do i even bother sending out fleets at all? Well, spawning sacks of course.... the RNG for getting those is effing evil man.
What do you even need such a large fleet for? I currently have just 10 frigates, 2 of each speacialization and can easily complete all of the 5 daily missions.
Do you get more or more difficult missions, when you have more frigates?
I don't think so.
But the fact that two frigates are capable of doing all the missions illustrates the benefit of using support frigates. I can stack up 3 support frigates with two organic frigates and do the same job as standard frigates for much less fuel
I wish they were void eggs! Void eggs i can buy with quicksilver, which i have 34762 and nothing to spend it on.
Max frigates for each mission is 5. Everyday, the mission tab fully refresh with new mission. You get 6 missions everyday, so, 30 frigates you send out everything at the same time.
More frigates you add to the mission, bigger is the loot and its quality when you are low rank. Once you get most of frigates up to S rank, I can't tell the difference that much too. I guess less risk of being damaged, or delayed.
About difficulty, It seems to be random. Max I've seen was 3 or 4 stars? But there again, I'm a bit rusty on NMS, I lost bits of information here and there. What I can tell is that, 5 frigates is better than one or two for the outcome lol
So what are those for? Lemme guess, the upgrades or parts for the living ship? I never owned one, you can tell :D
Yep, living ship.
Absolutely disappointing performance and stats if i am honest. which is horrendously out of balance with how difficult it is to get (first one) and upgrade. The only thing worth a dam about them are the aesthetics
But as disappointing as the ship is, i plan to upgrade it as much as possible just to be thorough.
I haven't looked at the stats, but a living ship with maxed out S-class upgrades feels roughly the same as any other ship performance wise imo. Getting those upgrades is another thing though.
