Passed out last night, died in-game, can't find grave
No marker on galactic map.

When I woke up (I had the game 'paused' via start menu, but obv not) I was taking damage (I assume life 2), got in ship, exited to quicksave, turned game off.

this morning I started playing, landed on a planet, got notification my scanner was busted - pull up inventory and see i have NO ITEMS. This is my save since DAY ONE - nearly 1000 hours played.

what do I do?

It's just stuff and if you have 1k hours you know how to get more stuff. You kind of need to know where you were to find your grave so I guess for now it's just a cautionary tale. Later you might see the humor in it.
If you die more than once, your grave is empty.

Summon your freighter to repair your gear. As far as missing inventory.... um go collect it again :(

In the past a grave marker would be visible all the way up to the galactic map - why is not there? Anyone else have markers vanish this update?
I think you've earned the honor of being 1st to die in v5.5

Were grave markers displayed in the map before this update????

I honestly haven't died in many years so I really don't know.

Of course the nms cross save is limited (been waiting since day one for the beta/invite) so I cannot even pull a save back that way. Steam cloud save auto writes and only holds one? Nms auto and manual save both were overwritten when I played today so can't rollback 24hrs.

Only option now is to just use a save editor to give myself things that took dozens of hours to acquire like void eggs, tainted metal, etc

That is why I use the ship to store all the harder to get stuff. Even the drone goes into the ship inventory. Too many times I have stepped away to use the bathroom or fixed dinner and regretted not flying into the anomaly or station. Even landing on planets is not safe with pirate attacks now.

Does your grave delete if you exit the game before getting it?

I'm 99% sure I'm back on the planet I died on - wondering if I scour the area I can just... Find it...

Probably does, yeah.

That's why it's important to store valuable items on your Freighter in vaults, i only carry around items that aren't that valuable, like resources that can build a base or on my ship, fuel and phosphor/dioxite/amonia/uranium to replenish the environmental hazard mods and some random items that are of no great importance if lost. If i need something more complex i summon the freighter to have access to them, or you can store some in the cargo of other ships you own, and keep your main ship inventory and personal inventory free of items that have value to you and don't want to risk losing in case you don't need them right away. I was in a similar situation a few months ago, i went to the kitchen, left my ship drifting in space and when i came back i was dead, but i didn't close the game while still dead so i don't know if the grave doesn't disappear erasing your items when you log out.
Save editor might help.

Yeha in the death consequences it states if you quit the grave is lost.

GG.

Not how I wanted to spend my limited weekend time, but I guess I'll be using a save editor to restore what I can remember and just give myself 5k stacks of important resources.

I AM thankful Hello Games allow us to openly edit saves (via external tools) without acct ban or other garbage like other games would.
For further options go to setting and I think you can remove death consequences from your game unless you're playing PD.

Yeah I toggled that on. No longer a standard save, but custom. No biggie since the only achievements I need are for permadeath mode anyway.

Hacked together most of my missing items - just a lame way to spend my Saturday morning...

Learn to duplicate and you can get resources back quickly. Not everything can be duped anymore, but literally all the farm-able resources can be, including things that can be refined into nanites. All it takes is 1 of a thing and you can turn it into stacks upon stacks. Faster and easier than save-editing. As for the hard-to-get stuff like Void Eggs and Tainted Metal, hit me up and I can give you some things. I'm already in the game and won't be checking here very often so shoot me an invite or something.

This is the best advice I've ever taken for this game @Bufferlow

"Expect buggy weather the first week- Make personal save backups
EASY SAVE BACKUP

Create a folder somewhere to backup your saves. In that folder create a text file and rename it "NMSBackup.bat". Open it in Notepad and copy the following text. Replace the part with "yourusernamehere" with whatever your windows username is.

echo off

set folder=%date:~10,4%_%date:~4,2%_%date:~7,2%_%time:~0,2%%time:~3,2%
set folder=%folder: =0%
mkdir %folder%

echo %folder% created

xcopy "C:\Users\yourusernamehere\AppData\Roaming\HelloGames\NMS" %folder% /E

Then create a shortcut to this and place it on your desktop (or wherever you want). Run it whenever you want to backup your save. It will create a folder with the current date and time with your save backed up.

This will not only create a backup, but you'll have time stamped backups you can always revert back if need be."
