I wandered so far of the location of my ship I can't find it.

Then, you use the map and it points out a location you are supposed to go to.
Then, you go to that location and you'll get a Hermetic Seal.
All that remains is to install the Analysis Visor and use the Hermetic Seal to build it. Once built, the default F key lets you look through it and you can find your ship using that.
You can build/install the VISOR as soon as the game starts, requires 1 Carbon Nanotube (50 carbon)
You obtain the Hermetic Seal to finalize the REPAIR of your pulse drive
No, you repair the Scanner at the beginning, but yes, the Hermetic Seal is not used to make the Analysis Visor, but rather the tutorial asks you to build the Visor right after you get the Hermetic Seal even though it doesn't require the Seal.
EDIT: I''m a dumbass and used the wrong names!
You REPAIR the Analysis Visor Scanner with 75 Ferrite Dust

The VISOR in NOT installed

Note: this is from a brand new NORMAL game
No, you repair the Scanner which is the thing that pulses and highlights nearby o2/Na/H2.
The Analysis Visor, the thing that you scan with, is installed after finding the Hermetic Seal.
To be honest, I always thought it was confusing that you scan with the Analysis Visor, but the actual Scanner does not Scan nor do Scanning Mods apply to it lol.
AFAIK, any of the Custom settings will not disable achievements, at least in Normal mode.
I always do Custom, if at least to turn off technology damage because of how BS that mechanic is. I also set creatures on Defensive-only because aggressive critters are so annoying and I just don't like dealing with the stupid things.
