Fishing catalogue
I'm trying to catch all the fish in the catlogue, but a few are blacked out with question marks under the icon. Do these need to be scanned, not in game yet or some other reason? Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

The ones with ??? are ones you haven't seen in that save yet.
If you catch them in a trap then they are added to the catalogue greyed out.
Once you catch them with your rod they are added in colour.

They are just more rare. It just takes time.
Cheers.

These are most of the fish I've caught during the last expedition redux:

Of course, you need visit as many planet types as you can to catch all of them. For example, I caught Vampire squid(the purple legendary one) only once. Extremely rare.

You just have to fish in the right biome at the right depth, and depending on the fish, the right time/weather... after that it's just rng.
Part of what makes the Vamp Squid feel especially rare is that it is nocturnal.

I caught (with a rod, not traps) all fish from more than half of the biomes for the sake of completionism, then got bored of the process and started a PD run, but I'll go back to finish off the set eventually...
So far the Reef Guardian took me the longest to catch, like 100+ bionic lures for 1...

I'm trying to do all the cooking recipes, just to cross them off. Nutrition is virtually worthless in this game, but same completionist concept.

I'm just up to the fish now. I'm taking a little break after doing all the animal by-products. The few fish I've caught, however, are just adding to the total, not filling in holes that I missed.

Currently only at 597/628 for (all) Materials & 1093/1236 for (all) Recipes.

hehe, I've not gotten too deep into the recipes (yet)... Maybe once I have a few spare maxed out ships to fit all the ingredients :steamhappy:
Lucky for you, there really aren't that many recipes for fish. A lot less than all the fish types. The link I shared above used to have all of them listed but is seems image 1 of 2 is corrupted now. Afaik, the Angler is the only one that gives a unique cooked version, but if memory serves me correctly, you've got that one already...

Actually it's just like with the other recipes. Making 1 Well Stirred Stew doesn't take that off the list. You need to make a Well Stirred Stew with every possible combination of ingredients to fully cross it off. Same with every single other recipe. My "food" spreadsheet page is currently 1310 lines long & I know I'm still missing stuff.

But I did confirm with fish, there are 9 fish that will all cook into a Fish Fry for example. You need to do ALL of them to cross off every recipe.

I've only tested the basics, because if that's also the case with Assorted Roe, Salty Platters, Seafood Stews, or Sea's Bountys, I'm just not prepared to confirm that answer for myself. Because that's going to be ridiculous.

Oof, I didn't realise you had to do all variants for each recipe to fill out the catalogue... that's one way to keep ya busy I suppose...

There are 38 recipes for creature pellets.

Those ones are special: there's only one recipe for each (e.g. "any two raw seafood"). So you don't need to go through all the combinations.
But I'm curious about the OP's question. The only catalogue of fish I have found is the list of fishing records under "Wonders", which doesn't black out uncaught fish, it just greys out the picture and says 0 caught. Am I missing something?

I will believe that once I see it for myself.

They're grayed out if you've seen them but not caught them on that save. For example, it has fish that I've gotten during expos grayed out, but there's also plenty of blacked out ??? fish. I do not know if that is fully across all saves, or if it's an expo thing.

For example, I've caught The Lunker in expo, same with the singing sea-snail & hypnotic octopus, but I have not caught them in regular play. I've even transfered them out of expo, & they're grayed out. But you can see there are still blacked out fish that I've never seen, expo or otherwise. I have not fished on another save, so I cannot confirm the length of that reach.

Also, we're not talking about "records". We're talking about Materials, Items & Recipes.

If you catch them in the automated trap, they get added greyed out... you have to catch them with a rod to get them in colour with the heaviest caught stat...
I presume gaining knowledge of the fish any other way, like being gifted the items, or knowledge carried over from expos (not certain if that works or not), will add them in grey too

My recipes dropped from 1300 & change down to 341/430.

Looks like they condensed all the recipes down. So I just spent 5 weeks gathering, charting, recording & cooking for nothing.
