The Mission giver at every space station will give you missions that also will increase your rank with the local guild. The missions provide you with useful rewards and money. Just collect as many as you want and they can be completed simultaneously.
Many can be completed in other systems and handed in at alternative space stations but it can be useful to do them while you are in the system you collected them. If you lose track of secondary missions they can be abandoned or complete them when you return to the NPC mission giver you collected them from.
As you gain rank with each race the Guild envoy will unlock better items you can redeem. The higher rank you are the Guild envoy may give away many items for free. Also being a higher rank with any race you may also get discounts off trade prices in certain interactions or exchanges and buying components or blueprints from some NPC vendors at trade hubs or minor buildings or settlements. It helps to collect a bunch of missions at each space station to gain rank quickly and abandon missions you decide you no longer need.
