Yes you have to spend the QS in full again & the process takes 5 days of waiting.
If you think that's nutty, wait till you need the Mods for it, those are from Psyonich Eggs you get from Freighter/Expeditions you send out randomly come back with them.
Also Void Egg encounters that as far as I've encountered only occur if your warping around IN A living ship.
Granted you can upgrade them with Nanites, so if you get A C Grade, you can just spend to make it an S grade, but you still gotta find the damn things & that's pretty time consuming.
Best bet now is to do the expedition, get the ship reward, then make sure it's the last ship you use before leaving the Expo, then Copy it & claim it in your regular save, you'll get the mods & won't have to worry about any living ship being combat & flight viable right out the gate.
You'll have to find the Saline Carapace & the living ship versions of Cargo Scanner & other bits, but you'll have weapons, engines, Warp & shield mods ready to transfer to to the living ship you made if you feel so inclined.
its weak in speed
its weak in firepower
its weak in shields
its weak in warp range
You name it, its weak.
Its SUPERB in appearance though, i gotta give it that, at least it has that.
Otherwise truth be told mine isn't too far off from my Main Save Exotic, which really surprises me!
But as my Expedition ship, it's perfect, time spent possibly getting void eggs, more nanites faster Milestone since most seem to have "Earn X amount of Nanites"
Psyonic Eggs from Freighter Expeditions count as Cargo not Mods, so I can take as many of those back as I find.
But mainly, it has the BEST Fishing platform, it's A forward Jutting point that's as impressive as Bruce Campbells Chin but not attached to as much "Groovy" awesome.
I'll try to toss the stats here when I get off from work, it really is surprising, but they aren't nearly as bad as one would think, just A pain in the cornshute to GET there.
I agree that stats of living ships are not that bad, people are just used to borked DPS on the Q-resonated infraknife, which is not available on living ships. But by any other standard, the living tech is quite okay.
Also back on the opening question: Once you have completed the quest, you can get more living ships investing void eggs and nanites, but without doing the quest chain all over. E.g. the fandom wiki explains the process well, and how you can reload for
a ship with another appearance. Also, quicksilver is fairly convenient to earn with expeditions.
I copy it over with all the mods & if I find A neat one during expo I already have weapon mods to transfer & don't have to find new ones either & no copy loss or space taken in the 8 mod slots, also a way to transfer out mods.
I took the Living Ship I brought into it, transfer all the mods onto the reward ship & did the same thing, even the overloaded mods transferred, so now I have 2 wraiths, on in storage, the other is in my Freighter Fleet, sold it to an NPC then enlisted him in my Squadron.
I kinda want to do A whole squadron of them now, A pack of attack space Coelacanth Starships.
Excellent idea about the multitool/Living ship and the mods!
I love the idea of a whole squadron of them. I'll have to get that going on the old save I'm working on. A Cartographer's save that I never did the main quests on.
GET OUT OF MP before you start this process.
Before you buy the new egg I would suggest that you go to reddit or another site to find one you really like the looks of if that's your bag. There are some fabulous ones. This is all about looks, fashion is the end game in NMS.
Find a ship you like then go to the Space Station in that system. You must visit the space station. Then go to the site the ship will be at and drop a save beacon about 300u out from the site, a short walk, within visual range. You could actually drop a base there if you choose and it's possible
Go to a different galaxy - only then call the anomaly and buy your egg. Pulse till you get the egg ship that gives you the coordinates it thinks you need. Ignore them.
Go back to the SS or anomaly and go to your beacon/base in that other galaxy.
Jump out of your ship which creates a restore point or tag the beacon to make a restore point. Be about 300 u from the ship site.
Only then go to your log and change the LS quest to local area.
There will be a ship there. Walk to it. It may or may not be your LS. If it's not visible reload the RESTORE point and the LS hidden underneath should pop.
Pay your 10000 nanites and jump in and out of ship to actually purchase it. If you don't hop in and out of ship it's a problem.
It's a process but Living Ships are great if you like them which many of us do. Make up your own mind about their worth. Hope my directions aren't too garbled. There are many ways the process can go sideways if you do things in the wrong order. Back in the good old days of manual saves it was way easier to manipulate this process. You can consider the process a big grind or a little minigame in NMS.
Enjoy.
This answer sounds like I can start a new void egg (a second one after completing the quest) and then reload immediately as if it didn't happen. Or do you mean a manual save? Or do I have the option to turn the ship down and keep a void egg and then select another quest if I want?
