why are so many living ships an ugly grey?
I'm not talking about the new wraith but the old school living ship, like maybe I've just had bad luck but every living ship I've found has been an ugly grey with some slight red or pink. I know there are coordinates that lead to spectacular looking ones but I want to know why they are not in general more colorful? it's just disappointing for something that takes a lot of work to acquire.

grey best color
i chose my first one on its shape and colour, its not grey at all, i do love them but it feels almost a worry sometimes if you go out and something breaks :)

I've done like 5-6 Living Ships across different saves, and every single one of them was a brown/grey/white ball with tendrils on it that looks somewhat like a giant eyeball.

I can only but assume that your first LS is always looking like that? I find it hard to believe that in 5-6 save files I somehow stumbled upon the same model over and over again.

I do not feel like grinding up QS for more eggs to get more LS to get one that doesn't look so plain and drab and thankfully the Wraith kinda fixes both that, and the stupid QS requirement for the Void Egg.
You may not have seen many ships then. My first was red and black. My second is blue/black/gold

The appearance isn't random, it's tied to the location it's found in. You can look up pics of ships with coordinates where you can go to get them. You can take a little bit of RNG out of the enormous random number generator that this amazing game is.

Living ships (LS) are the one thing you think they'd have gone crazy with coloring, simply using the natural variety on our world. Tropical fish alone, as samplers, would have been fantastic. Alas... they only have so much time for design and coding.

By now though... I'd have thought we'd see LS modules at a few select space stations...

Every single one I found looked like a flying turd...
I think most living ships have the coloration of .... fish. So a lot are grey/yellowish, with some rainbow highlights or other color striping that give them vague other color tones. Like rainbow trout in a way., if trout had dayglow yellow striping. Also, like most ships, the color filter of the planet, time of day, space station etc. can drastically alter what it looks like at any given moment. Which has always annoyed me a bit in this game. Half the time I don't really know what the "true" color of a ship even is. Or I only like the way it looks in a single color-filter situation. >.>

Like, this is the exact same ship:

The only time I bothered getting one, there was this trick to keep reloading a restore point before approaching the actual living ship quest last marker (EDIT: or maybe I would reload and go to a different spot each time, tbh, I forget), each time the ship would spawn differently or something. So I got to see quite a few (btw, I don't know if that still works). The one I picked was sort of yellowish-grey with ranbow luminescence spots. Sometimes it looked blue. Sometimes it looked light yellow/purple. Sometimes it looked greyish. I didn't like the 1st person cockpit nor the supposed work to upgrade it so I ditched it. :P

I also just generally found them ugly. Personal taste of course. :D

The new living ship looks way better than the old one. Never owned one, but this time around, will see :)

What perks does it have the new LS?

as far as I've researched they are basically the same. you upgrade them the same and everything.

Yeah, I will agree there. The color palette of the expedition one is more my style. From landing platform screenshots I've seen it's still kinda ugly for my tastes. Plus too large. I like tiny ships with few or no "deco-extensions".

I got an absolutely beautiful green/black specimen so you can get lucky
If you don't like the looks or colour, I believe you can reject it and warp to a new system and trigger the encounter again, but maybe that only works on a second egg.
I went to Eissentam to find my all red living ship.
There are tons of color variations as well as body shapes. The NMS Coordinate Exchange at rcan show you variations and glyph addresses.
