Expedition start is a joke
I'm absolutely disgusted with this second playthrough of the expedition. The first time, there was no carbon anywhere, and now on the second run, there’s no ferrite, not a single rock to break down for resources. Excuse my language, but WTF are you doing with this expedition? This is one of the most idiotic design choices I’ve ever seen, first, you remove carbon in the first playthrough, and now you remove ferrite in the second playthrough? Is this a joke? On top of that, extreme conditions non stop.

They give you a refiner. There are also rusty boxes all around. so refine the rust....

Again, more RNG.

When I did it, I only saw *one* box and that wouldn't have been enough.

But yes, between boxes, barnacles on the surface and formations in caves, you will eventually find enough, and with TWO overshields, you can last quite awhile, and Na flowers are everywhere.

Honestly, you have a bigger danger of dying to the stupid tornadoes than anything else.

I;'ve never died from the Tornadoes, because I don't let the Tornado drop me to the ground. I turn on my Jetpack.

Pretty simple expedition. What's the point of doing it twice?

I hate when developers make games annoying rather than challenging.

Yeah its annoying for you because you cant handle challenge lol
So far i had no problems in new update or in new Expedition, I just love NMS
I think you are a joke, mate.

Why would you watch a movie twice? Got a favorite TV show? No need to ever rewatch an episode, right? I would say a favorite book, but it's obvious that 80% of the players on this forum have learned to read from a coloring book, so that's not a very good example anymore.
There is the equivalent of Carbon EVERYWHERE!!

All of those big crystals on all the hillsides say they are made of Salt...AT FIRST.

If you scan them, and then try blasting a few, you will find that they are about 55% Salt, 45% Oxygen.

You have a refiner.
1x Oxy => 1x Carbon.

In addition, there are patches of 4-5 Condensed Carbon crystal clusters about every 70u, in almost all of the terrain. Try walking around as far as you can get before having to turn back...or, here's a thought, try moving your ship, or take a longer walk by carving a rest cave with your TerrManip.

Again, refiner.
1x ConCarb => 2x Carbon.

Yes, it is a sucky, annoying planet, but it is a challenge, not a player trap.
Indeed the start of the expedition was a hoot, being chased around by what someone on some other thread called the Pigpen storms, straight out of Snoopyville. There's not much that scares anyone in this game but landing from a tornado with just a thread of health was a shocker. I went back there just before the end of phase 5 and built a nice little base. It was no longer even a bit of a challenge.
Carry on.
Newer players to the game or those that don't appreciate a challenge might have had a different experience. Expeditions are all about thinking on your feet, or in the air...

We are mostly old peeps complaining about kids. Think I read an earlier post by Liviticus complaining to Moses about those damned kids on their tablets (the original tablets, clay of course). Such is always the way. In current times games are wasted on the young. hehe

Quartzite in refiner makes chromatic metal

I need chromatic metal to leave the planet but there are no resources to manufacture chromatic metal
Read it again "only has ferrite and cobalt". Ok, sometimes I can find sodium in the rocks.

Well... I got stuck on a planet that only has ferrite and cobalt, I need chromatic metal to leave the planet but there are no resources to manufacture chromatic metal, so for me this expedition is done. It was my first and last expedition, it was bad enough having to start a whole game from the beginning just to do new missions, and finally when I got the will and time to play an expedition, I found the experience very saturating and then I got stuck on the planet, it went "beautifully". At least there are a lot of people who like playing expeditions, I'm glad that, unfortunately, I'm not one of those people.

Quartzite can be used to make chromatic metal. Every planet in the game has a resource that can be used to make chromatic metal.

I know that, but I made a mistake in coming to this planet, I needed ferrite and I didn't calculate my fuel, this planet doesn't contain quartzite or activated quartzite, only ferrite, cobalt and sodium, but sodium is a little rare, and the only resource deposits it has is rusty metal. But it doesn't matter anymore, I just put it aside and continue with my main save, it doesn't bother me anymore. I don't mean to say that the expeditions are bad, I just didn't enjoy the experience, it's just personal taste.

This exp is super easy and not even close to a "challenging" one.
I have troubles with carbon on the starting planet as well but there are things you can convert into carbon, you need a refiner and a little curiosity. Come on, its a game about exploration! Go put that thing into refiner and see what happens!

Personally, I didnt like this exp as it has ZERO of the narrative. Just simple "go there, do that, make this".
Boring.
All previous was interesting when you uncover the story behind it. Like about that guy who fed himself to the xenomorphs.... . Im not saying it was a masterpiece but at least it was something.

Everyone starts the Expedition on the same planet.

You walk to your starship, collecting 7 storm crystals on the way and blasting the abundance of small condensed carbon and picking up the abundance of sodium flowers.
Stop and mine some Cobalt, some Activated Quartzite and some Crystallised Helium on the way.

At your ship, collect your 2 or 3 Milestone rewards (you're bound to have got the Tornado one too), install the pre-packaged Personal Refiner and you now have everything you need.
Since it seems I can lead the horses to water but cannot make them drink, let me spell this out more clearly.
Between your spawn point and the location of your starship, there WILL be Storm Crystals and Condensed Carbon crystals. There will be Sodium flowers and hopefully some Oxygen flowers too.
You may have to zig-zag a bit to get the 7 storm crystals to unlock the Advanced Mining Laser so you can start harvesting any big Condensed Carbon crystals.
Look in your visor. The planet has three types of minable mineral deposits. You should mine at least one "node" of each of them.
Cobalt
Activated Quartzite
Crystallised Helium
Tunnel under with the Terrain Manipulator and mine them from underneath to avoid the harsh climate drain on your two heat resistance modules while you mine them.
Open any Damaged Machinery you find along your path. They may give you handy upgrade modules or nanites, plus they can have Rusted Metal or Faecium that you should claim.

Once you reach your Starship, you can claim and install the pre-packaged Personal Refiner into your Exosuit. Fuel it with some of your Condensed Carbon.
Put the Crystallised Helium in the refiner. It will refine to Ferrite Dust. A lot of it.
Do the same with any Rusted Metal you have collected for even more Ferrite Dust.
Put most of the Activated Quartzite in the refiner. Keep 140 AQ aside (you'll need it later on for a tech install). It will give you Chromatic Metal. A lot of it (likely more than you'll need to fully complete the Expedition).
Make 20-30 Ion Batteries with some of the Ferrite Dust and Cobalt to keep your hazard protection charged so you don't need to worry about the harsh climate any longer.
Now you can refine some Ferrite Dust into Pure Ferrite. Make a Metal Plate and an Hermetic Seal.
Repair your starship. Make the antimatter and antimatter housing and then a Warp cell.

Now you can keep looking around the Start planet for other milestone achievements or take off and look at the 5 moons.

I should have done exactly as you described, but I made the mistake of ignoring the objectives and went in search of ferrite without calculating my fuel. I landed on a planet loaded with ferrite and cobalt, I should have mined quartzite and copper when I had the chance on the first planet, I just acquired what I needed at the time. It's ok, I have the main save, anyway I was already finding it boring and annoying before this happened to me, I didn't like the experience. I just tried to do an expedition to try out different quests, the rewards don't interest me.
But thanks for the guide, it's very useful and will help a lot of players.

I'm pretty sure there are no planets in NMS without stellar metals... at the very least there are no systems without any. And you don't need chrome for launch fuel...
What are the 3 resources listed for the planet?

If I still remember, it was ferrite, cobalt and rusty metal, but I'm not sure, I haven't been on the expedition for a few days, and I need resources for warp and speed, if I remember I'm more than 3 hours from the nearest planet and the system doesn't have a space station. I got bored and ventured out in search of a challenge, and the challenge caught me. I made too many mistakes and I was too confident.
But it's only now that I've realized that the parts where I had the most fun were when I made those mistakes, maybe my experience wasn't as bad as I thought, I was just bored at the time. As it was my first expedition, perhaps I judged too soon, perhaps I will try again later.
