5 jumps on a starter ship.. 2/5 max distance on a found sentinel ship.
500+LY is some rookie numbers.
Meh...it was kinda worth it...3 of the systems on the route had the stuff the end-user needed...so I bought them up as I went along...made myself a tidy $50M credits.
Never heard of a "trade surge"

With the economy scanner installed, you have an option in the quick menu to scan for trade opportunities. Not at home, so can't get more detailed.

I thought it just shows the economy type in the galaxy map. And maybe helps you find trading posts.

The Economy Scanner lets you know where the big $ is to be made

Update 4.6 introduces the Trade Surge stuff: Orbital: Introducing Update 4.6 [www.nomanssky.com] (search for the term "trade surge" - there are multiple hits).

* The Economy Scanner can now detect nearby trade surges, in addition to detecting planetary outposts.

* Trade surges are time-limited events in nearby systems that offer an increased profit margin on key goods. Find a source of the required trade items to take advantage of these surges.
It's not that hard to get 1300 LY jumps on a ship with the hyperdrive modules.

500 LY is small.

OH. Heh. Yeah, sorry about not getting that.
I was tired I guess.

I upgraded my ship to 2150 ly, and it could be upgraded further as I don't have any upgrade mods over 260 ly. I've seen individual mods up to about 300 ly, but I've just been slowly sieving the mods as I buy them, or scrap ships to get them, no rush. As others pointed out, 500 ly is small. Get yourself a 220 ly base hyperdrive ship rather than the 101 ly base ships, - those include some exotics, and mostly explorers.
I was just watching ships come in recently and saw a 217 ly ship so bought it. It's a bit ugly, so I will keep it as a place holder until I find something higher.
