The last species of rare underwater fauna
I started to complete the fauna discovery, but found that I couldn't find the last rare specie of the underwater world. At first I thought I was just unlucky with the generation and decided not to worry about it and flew to other planets.
But finding myself again on a planet with water, in my list of research was again missing another animal. And oh coincidence, it was also categorized as rare and underwater inhabitants.
This happened about two or three more times. I want to make it clear that I am not saying that rare underwater animals do not appear - on the contrary, in the discovery list I have a lot of open rare underwater ones, but always, and I mean always there is the last undiscovered species with the same features (underwater, rare).
I tried restarting quicksaves near the underwater creature locations for hours, examined every section of the planets and nothing has worked for me.
I can certainly understand that I could just be extremely unlucky, but believe me I've spent enough time and methods on this to rule out such an outcome. It happened both on the expedition planets and in normal mode.
I've had similar issues with rare underground species before, but I've always found them eventually.
I'm wondering if this problem is just me or has anyone else experienced this as well?

Since the Worlds Pt II (v5.50) update with the addition of Gas Giants that include (five) very small moons; there are still (after eight patches) issues with the following on these small moons:
1 Water (level)
2 Underwater fauna
3 Water in caves
4 Underwater fauna in caves
I'm sure all issues can be traced back to the changes to create these new, tiny moons. I have submitted numerous bug reports with save files to demonstrate and confirm the issues.

Normal planets, (not moons orbiting a gas giant) have been spawning fauna properly. The tried and true methods we used before the v5.50 update still work fine. I have pages of screenshots to confirm.

Usually for that last rare underwater fauna you will need to locate (pre-Worlds Pt II) deep water. Usually any large body of water will do. The sweet spot was often between 35u and 50u depth. (see item 1, tiny moon water depth will often not exceed 10u). The last underwater fauna was usually a large single fish that hunted the smaller ones that spawned in packs... flocks... ah... schools!

That last underwater fauna can also be a crab-like fauna.

Additional observations include:
* Time of day will 100% affect any/all fauna spawning. While using your scanner, you can see the planetary local time in the upper right.
* Underground fauna are still illusive (esp for the untrained/inexperienced). They can spawn right in front of you while in a cave and then teleport to the surface. If you don't notice this happening you will of course think that the game is bugged as you'll never "find" the fauna "in" a cave.

Hmm, hard to tell. I usually jump into the water and out of it to reset spawns. Sometimes it takes a few, sometimes it takes a few dozen. Sometimes I give up—so that may be it. But sometimes I want to give up, yet I do the reset a couple more times and get the rare spawn.

Rare underwater and underground can be a pain to find. I've found that rare water monsters tend to spawn in deeper water, following another player's advice.

I've also found that it pays to double check the details. I've spent an annoying amount of time searching for creatures because I didn't wait long enough on the description page to see the "found in the north" part of the creature description.

not to contradict you, but I have to tell you that these days, coincidentally, I am on a moon around a gas giant that has fairly deep water. Not only that. There is also a lot of underwater fauna and the fauna also passes through the adjacent caves. I think this is good news for you and for all of us. It certainly won't be easy to find, however.
@frvind74 - no worries, we all experience the game differently and I too have noticed that since the v5.58 patch, underwater fauna will now “swim” into those underwater caves or excavated areas (prior, they would not / did not, so an improvement). However I still have not observed any UF actually spawn in these underwater caves.

I’m watching the Experimental builds & have tested both new & my submitted saves & update my support tickets.

The fix for the, what I called “underwater hiccups” was most welcome.
At least for me, it turns out the last underwater critter is often the gold fish (shiny). They often do specify it is nocturnal, but I have found them without that designation in the daytime. They do show up better at night.
