appearance unlocks?

I know I've unlocked a couple head pieces while playing recently. I can't remember what they were, but I remember the notifications. But I went to the appearance modifier today and I don't see anything new in there. Looks like the same stuff from when I started playing. Do I need to claim these new appearance pieces someplace?

I checked again and I see them now. I didn't see them at first as they were scattered around in between the lock symbols. Now I feel stupid lol. Oh well, thanks anyways.

EDIT: how do I unlock more appearance pieces, like backpacks and stuff?

some of the stuff is locked to late/ "end" game and other stuff you get by doing missions and expeditions
