How's the base building?
How intricate/cool/diverse is the base building? Is it simple and limited, or is it pretty deep?

A good portion of the player base spends the majority of their time base building in NMS. To them, it offers a massive degree of freedom and depth and they make some pretty amazing constructions.

To another portion, it's janky and not very interesting and they spend very little time on that part of the game.

I think the main thing is that it can be great, if you are willing to spend time learning all of the glitch-building techniques and have a really good imagination. It's nothing special though if you either don't want to glitch-build or just don't want to take the time to learn the techniques involved.

I'm personally in the latter camp, I don't want to glitch build so I find the base-building in NMS far more limiting than other games that just do it better (without needing to take advantage of glitches). But I really do enjoy seeing the amazing things other people build, so even for me the base building enhances the game...not because I do much of it, but because I spend time appreciating what others have done.

It's as deep as you want it to be if you are willing to do the work and get through the learning curve. The showcase builds are worth a look. All depends on you, lots of vids to watch and much help from your friends at google, wiki, whatever.

There's definitely a lack of vanilla building pieces. Some mods can give you thousands more but others need the mod to see them.

Why don't the devs just take the mod and apply them to the game is a mystery, it's their pieces in the end, they have all rights to them they are pieces from the game and someone made the hard work for them BUT they keep giving us one or two stupid pieces at a time it's ridiculous.

I posted a video to a base a week ago, here is a link to the post.

terrain manipulation to fit structures on glitches out but other than that it's pretty good. no ark or enshrouded levels of building but it's not bad

It's good. I usually build something fairly simple that has everything I need. Other people spend weeks and months building entire cities or colossal structures.

Here's my most recent base-

That is really cool. How'd you get the fish in there?

I build a lot not using Glitches or Mods. I just have to get creative sometimes. My best one still has to be cleared out occasionally as its a whole Underground set of buildings on a Frozen world.

Can someone explain "glitching"? I like building in games like Conan, 7DTD, and Valheim, all of which have some pretty solid base building mechanics in them. How do NMS's compare to those? Thank you.

It is pretty fun and you can make it complicated and deep. It does take a lot of work time to get really good at it. It is not one of those things that gives you immediate mad skills. Time and perseverance will make it all feel simple because you know how the building sub-program likes to work things out.

I made this just using the basic controls and structure parts that are available. I think the hardest part was gathering all the mats and it was extreme world so had to manage my hazard protection regularly.

Suggest building ABOVE the ground, when your structures dig into the ground like this the ground will 'regrow' into your buildings, it always happens! Also do NOT use the terrain manipulator to dig your base into the ground, it bloats the save file and the ground WILL ALWAYS REGROW! (even if it takes a few days to do it)

I used a wonder projector under the floor. Trick I learn from a player Zoran, I think many people do this.

You can do it with a Aquarium and the Terrarium. In the same base I have this,
