Thanks! Good to know.
Do you prefer the legacy room modules or the new ones? And why that preference?
I use both. Legacy tends to work better for more closed in/darker room type settings like for my lounge area and personal quarters.
in terms of efficiency a freighter farm is. even nowadays, no competition

The Behive

148 active bio-domes,
13 plants each,
1924 plants
shortrange teleporters as part of a "infrastructure hub" replace stairways

The Beehive uses a stack of four leafed clovers (4*3 bio-domes per clover)

comparing
bio-dome: 13 plants (with one door and no "creative system use")
double cultivation chamber: 4 plants
1924 plants in biodomes, using 13 plants/bio-dome:
1924/13=148 bio-domes
1924 plants in double cultivation chambers, using 4 plants/chamber:
1924/4=481 chambers
in terms of material usage, leaving materials for connecting tunnels,... out of the equation:
comparison (based on having 13 plants in one bio-dome)
bio-dome: 25 magnetised ferrite + 5 glass
double cultivation chamber: 60 silver + 35 oxygen + 25 faecium
-> *3.25 (to equal one bio-dome): 195 silver +113,75 oxygen + 81,25 faecium
example for using double cultivation chambers

Thanks for your input, but you must have missed one of my statements in OP:
"I suspect I'll want to expand that farm on my freighter for now, since I haven't found a planet I really want to build a large farming base on."
I am still in explorer/learning mode, doing missions and such. I started my game over (after a 4 year absence) so it will be awhile before I want to settle down anywhere. I'm still looking for that "perfect planet" while I'm exploring; and I'm in no hurry. :)
building mining bases will be unavoidable.
plus, but this is just my opinion, there is no need to have all bases in one system
thanks to the base teleporters
feel free to visit me ingame and take a closer look
happy travelling :-)
ps
planet bases have an "element"-limit of 3k "elements" per base
where plants and building parts are both "elements"
quite likely freighter bases are the same, but not sure
pps
compared to planet-bases freighter bases are more likely to have "performance problems"/stutter from my experience
but sure it is fun to have an oversized motorhome
used that myself in the beginning
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2451596212
at that time, my capital ship had 6 of those "growing hallways",
without stutter-problems,
stutter problems, that got introduced with the new freighter base design
Second deck is all platforms, 'streets', and buildings for various zones and natural areas. You can literally build an awesome city on Freighters these days!
Wow! Since my last posting 9 hrs ago, I have been re-modeling and building my freighter base. I agree! I really like what they've done with the freighter farming modules, as well as other modules.
When I quit NMS 4 years ago, I took up Farming Simulator 19. Been building my farm ever since. After over 150 mods and over 5500 hrs of play time, I'm still finding ways to improve and upgrade my farm. So farming is not the primary reason I got back into NMS.
And after today, I realize what my draw to NMS is: Exploring, collecting, and building a farm for manufacturing higher values items. This satisfies the manufacturing engineer side of my brain. :)
So to that end, I REALLY like building a farm on the freighter!
well at least if one is interested in maxing
EDIT: Lucky me! I happened across an S-Class that decided to jump into the system I was in. New tech slots! And everything transferred fine (I left a few things in the general inventory to avoid the bug, if it's still there.)
