Freighter farms
I'm finding it a bit confusing learning what room blueprint I need to build a farm on my freighter. One wiki search said "on the second floor". Okay. How/what do I use to make a second floor? And do I use planet based modules, ie: cuboid rooms (like I did 4 years ago) or one of the freighter room modules that I need to unlock?

All I want to do (for now) is satisfy the newly hired farmer's missions. First one is: plant a new blueprint on my freighter farm, which I have to build first. But, I suspect I'll want to expand that farm on my freighter for now, since I haven't found a planet I really want to build a large farming base on.

Someone said last week (in another thread): "a lot has changed in 4 years." They're right. This game is way more complicated and convoluted than it was then. I'm not complaining, just finding that I need help catching up. :)

Thanks!

go on your freighter brigde to the terminal. you have 3 there. in one of them you can unlock all rooms for your freighter. the room you are looking for is the Cultivation Chambers. also here is a link with all rooms for your freighter

And you don't need a "second floor". You can build all these rooms on the main level.

You can extend main floor to 21x21 and add 13 extra floors upwards if you feel it o.o

Thanks! Good to know.

Another Q to those of you who build on freighters:
Do you prefer the legacy room modules or the new ones? And why that preference?

I use both. Legacy tends to work better for more closed in/darker room type settings like for my lounge area and personal quarters.

recommend to go for a bio-dome-agriculture farm on a planet
in terms of efficiency a freighter farm is. even nowadays, no competition

say hello to
The Behive
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2826515895
148 active bio-domes,
13 plants each,
1924 plants

shortrange teleporters as part of a "infrastructure hub" replace stairways
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2826520316

The Beehive uses a stack of four leafed clovers (4*3 bio-domes per clover)
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2501884131

some variants
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2502417972
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2502415855
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2502416807

comparing
bio-dome: 13 plants (with one door and no "creative system use")
double cultivation chamber: 4 plants

1924 plants in biodomes, using 13 plants/bio-dome:
1924/13=148 bio-domes
1924 plants in double cultivation chambers, using 4 plants/chamber:
1924/4=481 chambers

in terms of material usage, leaving materials for connecting tunnels,... out of the equation:
comparison (based on having 13 plants in one bio-dome)
bio-dome: 25 magnetised ferrite + 5 glass
double cultivation chamber: 60 silver + 35 oxygen + 25 faecium
-> *3.25 (to equal one bio-dome): 195 silver +113,75 oxygen + 81,25 faecium

example for using double cultivation chambers

Thanks for your input, but you must have missed one of my statements in OP:
"I suspect I'll want to expand that farm on my freighter for now, since I haven't found a planet I really want to build a large farming base on."

I am still in explorer/learning mode, doing missions and such. I started my game over (after a 4 year absence) so it will be awhile before I want to settle down anywhere. I'm still looking for that "perfect planet" while I'm exploring; and I'm in no hurry. :)

since plants are only one part of the "crafting tradeables equation"
building mining bases will be unavoidable.

plus, but this is just my opinion, there is no need to have all bases in one system
thanks to the base teleporters

feel free to visit me ingame and take a closer look
happy travelling :-)

ps
planet bases have an "element"-limit of 3k "elements" per base
where plants and building parts are both "elements"
quite likely freighter bases are the same, but not sure

pps
compared to planet-bases freighter bases are more likely to have "performance problems"/stutter from my experience

but sure it is fun to have an oversized motorhome
used that myself in the beginning
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2451596212
at that time, my capital ship had 6 of those "growing hallways",
without stutter-problems,
stutter problems, that got introduced with the new freighter base design

I still build planetary bases, but I LOVE my freighter farm. My first two rooms on the left and right are scanner and teleporter/terminus rooms, then there are stairs up to the 'main deck' - the entire rest of that first level is all farm cultivation chambers, with a nice area for the Farmer and a couple of food processors. 'Special Crops' in a hidden room in the back of course. :)
Second deck is all platforms, 'streets', and buildings for various zones and natural areas. You can literally build an awesome city on Freighters these days!

Wow! Since my last posting 9 hrs ago, I have been re-modeling and building my freighter base. I agree! I really like what they've done with the freighter farming modules, as well as other modules.

When I quit NMS 4 years ago, I took up Farming Simulator 19. Been building my farm ever since. After over 150 mods and over 5500 hrs of play time, I'm still finding ways to improve and upgrade my farm. So farming is not the primary reason I got back into NMS.

And after today, I realize what my draw to NMS is: Exploring, collecting, and building a farm for manufacturing higher values items. This satisfies the manufacturing engineer side of my brain. :)

So to that end, I REALLY like building a farm on the freighter!

but there is no need to build em up so big. once you start crafting the good valuable stuff, you hit youre credit cap so fast..... i build a mega farm on planet and ended up maxing my credits in less then a week. so, yeah i overdid it too.....
Ograus Sep 19, 2023 @ 4:26am
there is no "overdoing it" with credits, units, nanites,....
well at least if one is interested in maxing

I'm back in the game after a while and still figuring out basebuilding and such. Freighter question though: I picked up the first freighter I was offered so it's not the best. Should I be on the lookout for a new one? (and what will happen to the stuff I've got on my current guy if I get a new one) or is my current C-class Sentinel thing just fine? Will is always have poorer stats and storage or will it just take longer to upgrade?

EDIT: Lucky me! I happened across an S-Class that decided to jump into the system I was in. New tech slots! And everything transferred fine (I left a few things in the general inventory to avoid the bug, if it's still there.)
