You can "buy" new staff pieces and Autophage (Robot) appearance visualisations from Autophage Synthesis Terminals on any planet using "Void Motes" as currency (can also be done at Harmonic Camp terminals on Dissonant planets).
There are 19 pieces I have discovered - 3 quest pieces and 16 visually different bits that can be mix-n-matched to make your own staff (also done at a Synthesis Terminal or Harmonic Terminal).

Void Motes are earned by doing jobs for the Autophage and small amounts can be looted from wheelbarrows at Harmonic Camps.

And can be located at distance using the functionality of the Polyphonic Core Multi-tool tech, or, if you stumble across waypoint POIs with a steamy look to the ground like this:

then scanning with the Scan Harmoniser or Polyphonic Core installed will unmask the camp and terminal.

It doesn't matter how long you played the game, you still need to do all the main quest and the settlers quest for the new content to start.
I had no idea what was going on. I see now I was supposed to be destroying torpedoes, by bye poor civilian fleet LOL.
I thought I did all the pirate stuff, got my solar ship etc etc. But the only big ship I ever fought was the sentinel freighter. I killed a bunch of those but that pirate freighter was cool.
I wish there was a log of completed missions we could go back and at least see what we've done. I don't see that unless I missed it somewhere.
