Tritium (H3)
Hi all.
Now that I am using the frigate expeditions on a daily basis, I need to manufacture a lot frigate fuel, thus sending my need for tritium through the roof.
In other words, I am always short of tritium, like a junky.

I was wondering how you get your hands on the stuff?
Also, I am playing in Survival mode, which might make it a bit more tricky to hoard.

I know of the following sources:
1. asteroid mining, but slow going.
2. raiding space stations to buy from trade terminals or NPC traders, but it's with mixed results. Sometimes I find plenty, most often just peanuts.

You can make 2 less painful. Any system you find tritium for sale build a simple base in (bonus points if it also sells jellies). Use your economy scanner to locate a trading post in that system. Go there, build a base computer INSIDE the trade post, and name it appropaitely so that you remember whats there, then add 2 solar panels, a battery, and a teleporter. Once you have a few of these set up you can just teleport, purchase, teleport until you've cleaned out all the systems you did this with. 3 minutes worth of teleporting nets you enough tritium for a week of frigate fuel.

Are you refining tritium to create dihydrogen ?

That might be a bad idea because the rate is terrible.

Either buy dihydrogen in space stations or just farm it on planets. I think that should be faster than farming only tritium.

As for pure tritium, shooting asteroids is the fastest i think.

This.

If you enjoy or don't mind space combat, you can also farm frigate fuel from cargo pods. I never do this, but it is an option.

Nope, I combine tritium with di-hydrogen to manufacture fuel for my frigates.
Di-hydrogen x200 + Tritium x200 → Frigate Fuel (200 Tonnes) x1.

If you shoot cargo pods on freighters you find in pirate systems, the space sentinels don't come after you. You still lose some standing with the local race, but you can easily get lots of already-made frigate fuel (frequently found), as well as other things like salvaged frigate modules (rarer). You can just shoot and shoot as many cargo pods as you want, and the freighters hardly ever even try to shoot back.

For asteroid mining, find one of those clusters where the asteroids are densely clustered, instead of the lone ones that a scan brings up. Don't shoot fellow mining ships by accident if they appear (they often jump in your way), and use an upgraded phase beam to make it faster. You can get quite a bit of tritium, especially when you add the tritium hyperclusters you find sometimes.

Then you should run out of dihydrogen long before you run out of tritium. Shoot asteroids and don't forget to convert the tritium hyperclusters too.

@momopovich:
Unfortunately not. I refine jelly, so I always have a lot more di-H2 than H3.

@Opal Cruder:
Ok, I'll give the bad boy approach a try :steamhappy:

I never buy tritium, just doing asteroid mining sessions from time to time. From my experience you can get a decent quantity quite fast.

I always run 5 frigate expeditions in parallel. Mining the needed tritium is not an issue for me.
Buy tritium from pirate stations or anywhere you see it.

Otherwise simply attack freighter cargo pods for tons of ready made fuel. Pirate systems can be helpful to avoid losing too many faction rank points when attacking cargo pods in space. In Normal mode it's actually very easy to collect and run away to the safety of a space station and repeat over and over.

I used to buy all my H3 at space stations. I had made note of a few with 1000+ units, but that was several updates ago they may have nerfed that.

Trade terminals and traders in pirate systems will sell H2 and H3. My settlement is in a pirate system and I can buy some H2 and H3 there.

For mining use phase beams in a dense cluster for maximum results.

My frigate fleet has 20 support frigates. I send at least four on each mission and barely use any fuel. You'll need mostly S class frigates to do this. You can also use freighter upgrades to buff your expeditions to use lower class frigates or fewer frigates.

Yes that's wise. If you can use less fuel to do a mission then you won't need to craft or collect fuel as frequently. Support frigates lower overall fuel use costs when sent out together with other specialised frigates that use up more. When buying frigates of any type check the fuel amount they use in addition to their stats. Also you can add Frigate Oxidiser bonus upgrades in the provided fleet mission slots that effectively reduce fuel costs, speeding up missions. Fleets often return useful loot from missions too that can make fuel or fleet upgrade bonuses.

pirates system sell tritium and hydrogen at market

I always just bought my tritium at stations from the hubs that have it, and from the pilots that land. It's super cheap and yhou can get gobs of it. Di-Hydrogen is also extremely easy to get - buy up the Di-hydrogen jellies at the station and from pilots, and refine it back down to di-hydrogen. You get tons of it super fast. Then throw your tritium and dihydrogen in a refiner... done.

I've always just hit the asteroid belt when I needed to. In any case, it's a transitory issue. After a while, your frigates will all be S-Class and sipping fuel at 3-4/250ly, add in support ships to reduce it further, and many shorter missions use 50 or no fuel at all, long ones maybe 150.
