Increasing ship storage
I finally had an A Class ship land in my freighter that I liked, and it had way better maneuverability. So I emptied my B Class ship, dismantled everything I could (standing outside the guest ship so he wouldn't leave) and traded. The upside is that it is A Class, better than B, and it has great maneuverability. The downside is I lost 6 storage slots.

So now my primary mission is to add storage to my new ship. The slots cost 17M at the ship outfitter (starting at that, and probably going up) which I don't have yet. Then there is the "storage augmentation" which from what I read on wiki is rare and difficult to come by.

So my Q is: What's the best way to add storage to my ship at this point of my level in the game? I'm still really just getting back into this after a 4 year absence. Thanks!

The best way to upgrade ship storage at any "level of the game" is to throw money at it. Stand in the space station (any space station, but higher economy systems have more frequent high-grade ships), buy any A- or S- tier ships that land (don't trade your ship, that defeats the purpose), and salvage them. Sell the parts to keep your money flowing, and install the storage upgrade modules you get from them.

Not all the ships will give you a storage module, but most will. You'll also get other system upgrade modules, which you can install and scrap for more parts or just sell for more nanites. It's not cheap, by any stretch, but it'll be cheaper and more rewarding than buying 20M-25M storage upgrades directly... as you surmised, they get more expensive every time you add one.

Here's a reddit thread with some pointers. It's a year old, but the information is solid; this is the way.

If you want an honest opinion, dont invest in A class ship. Find a crashed S class exotic or Sentinel ship, then you should worry about investing in them.

The safest method to get Storage Augmentation items is buying ships in space station and immediately scrapping them. But you need Units them.

For that, a Storm Crystal planet is suggested. Find a planet with EXTREMELY harsh weather conditions, and when the storm is HARSH, some Crystals will start glow/sparkle bright white. You can loot these during these storms.

They sell for quite a lot.

Freighter missions can also give you ship expansions, but it's down to RNG how often you get them.

Mission Agents (and Nexus missions) often have them as rewards:
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3035337705

Freighter wreck salvage can have them.
Frigate Expeditions can return with them.

But rather than the "Spend Units" option in a Station, it's now better to find a Dissonant planet with a high rate of A class Sentinel Interceptors (I have had a few) and salvage them. You'll get the same rate of Augmentation Units as buying A class in the station, and will be making Units from the scrapping (rather than spending them to buy the ships and only getting a portion back).

However, my advice would be to save up the Augmentation upgrades and avoid expanding an A class ship until you find a desirable S class.

Two things:
1: I suck at fighting, but I'm good at making money (in-game, anyway). Standing in a station wheeling and dealing with the NPCs is always the preferred solution.
2: You can upgrade your ship's class for nanites, which you will get tons of when scrapping ships because of all the "useless" upgrade modules you'll acquire in the process. There's no reason not to upgrade even a C-class ship, if you like its looks; "It'll be an S eventually!"

Wow, folks! This is all great feedback!

@umop:
I'll start with you. Your tactic makes great sense. I've already found that the quickest way to grow capitol is finding wrecked ships on planets, claiming them (for free), then repairing their drives and shields ONLY, and flying them to a space station and scrapping them and their cargo (I made 9.2M on one ship alone). So now, according to your info and the reddit link (which I bookmarked BTW, thanks for that) I need to scrap enough salvaged ships to have enough capitol to follow your process. That is awesome! Thanks!

Thanks! Also good intel. I'm not sure about whether I'll prefer to deal with "extremely harsh conditions" or to just be a patient business opportunist as outlined by umop (above), but thanks for the option.

I couldn't agree more! In fact, one of the reasons I quit playing NMS 4 years ago was because I got tired of being forced to fight every time I came out of warp, when I had other goals on my mind. And I also prefer using my wits, instead of a gun, to advance. I would much rather study a situation for days and develop a covert strategy (i.e.: like Mission Impossible) than to just go in with guns blazing. I usually lose in the latter.

So thanks for the intel. I now have a "mission". :)

You could also find Activated Iridium planets, find an S grade mine field, setup 6x Mineral extractors and connect 11 storage to them.

repeat this step 4x, just be sure the 4 rows are far enough so they dont stack, but mine from their own fields.

can show a screenshot if you are interested. That sells for nice cash, and passive income. you need to harvest every 10 hours

NMS is a game where you just need to persevere.
The nice thing is that everyone can evolve at their own pace.
The beginnings can indeed be a bit frustrating as you always need something to proceed to the next level, such as "I need more cargo space so that I can earn more money from trading. I need more money so that I can get a better ship with more cargo slots. I need more cargo space ... etc etc."
As Umop mentioned already money is everything, and there are a lot of way to earn those units.

1. My very first tip would be to upgrade the scanning capabilities of your MT. It easy, fast, and helps a lot in early days when every item scanned (even rocks) rewards you with 20k to 50k units. Additional bonus is the nanites you can received if you manage to find all the fauna of a particular plate: easily 2k of nanites per planet.
2. If money is thigh don't hesitate to switch ships with NPCs at space station. Some of them have a significant number of cargo slots even at B or C class. This will allow you to do trading between systems, but you will need some funds to get started. Buy all the specific items from the space station and check via the NMS wiki which type of system will offered the best price for them. With some luck you can more than double your initial investment. It's not much fun of course, but it helps (if you find two good systems just teleport between them instead of flying :steamhappy:).
3. As soon as I can, I always upgrade the class of my favorite ship thanks to the accumulated nanites from scanning. Especially in the beginning don't disperse your efforts: concentrate on one ship and one MT. You can start collecting them at a later stage, no worries.
4. Once you do have some more funds, I would definitely follow the advice given by Panda, and build extractor farms. Activated iridium gives you the highest price per item, but there are other metals that are worth collecting in large amounts as well. Once every day warp to the base, empty the silos, sell the stuff, move on. You should even build a trade station at your farm so that the whole process does not take you more than 5 minutes per farm.
5. You need the relevant modules, but finding and selling sentinel ships is definitely a very lucrative business in early days, considering those ships sell for at least 30m units. Plus, they are great ships to have as well for trade. Keep one, dispose of the others.
6. This is up to you, but hanging out at the Anomaly can be lucrative as well. Plenty of players will help you out if you ask for it. Some even without you asking ... plenty of Santas over there :winter2019joyfultearsbulb:
7. Have a look at the missions available at space stations. Some of the rewards can be very lucrative for very little effort. And some reward you directly with Augmentation modules for ships.

Always keep like 100m units as a buffer for trade opportunities, but don't hesitate to put all the remaining units into buying space storage for your main ship.
After a while units accumulate without you even noticing. I now have like 1.700.000.000 units and not really sure what to do with them :steammocking:
Nanites become the limiting element, but that's a chapter for later.
Hope it helps.

Going through the wheelbarrows at harmonic camps usually gives 1 ship/multi-tool thingy. Painful but flying over a dissonant planet for a while might provide a few upgrades :)

i don't even fly them except for the last step to get them to the space station... before i claim any star ship, i always call my current star ship to my location... then i claim the new star ship and look at what is broken... most of the time, i just hop out and into my other ship that i had called to me... that switches that ship back to being my current ship... now i fly to my freighter or to the anomaly...

i generally have both of them pretty close to the space station... close like looking at the other two from the doorway on any one of them... this way i generally do not have to worry about shields because i'm flying such a short distance... i only need worry about the basic engines... and maybe the launcher which i don't recall if it has to be fueled to take off from a space station... everything else can stay broken...

so on my freighter or in the anomaly, i switch my ship for the broken one i just claimed... now i fix only the engines and fly it to the space station to scrap it... when i've scrapped it, i fly back to the anomaly or my freighter in whatever star ship is in my lowest numbered slot... once there, i switch back to my preferred star ship and take off to go find another ship to scrap...

doing it this way, i don't really care about fixing up more than the engines because i'm scrapping more craft faster... oh! also while i'm on the space station, i may buy some charts to find more wrecks with...

but you are not forced to fight... keep on flying straight ahead (or around large objects, of course)... use your boost, not pulse engines, and boost through and away from the battle... you'll soon be far enough away that your pulse engines will work and you won't have any enemies chasing you... now go on about your business to the space station, landing on a planet, or warping to another star system...

the only time the above may be hard is in the beginning before you have added maneuverability mods to your star ship... that should get you looking in the space stations and seeing what mods the NPCs have for sale in their little store booths... in the beginning, i'll buy as low as B-Class stuff but once i start having enough $$$ i start looking only at S-Class until i find a pirate base when i start looking at possible X-Class replacements...

I grew tired of grinding for inventory slots. So now when I get a new ship or freighter, I go to the difficulty options and make items free (I'm on normal difficulty). This is a good way to check out how close together supercharged slots are on ships you wouldn't normally get to see them in. I max out the slots on whatever ship in about 2 min, then turn the item cost back on lol. After 2k hours playing, I just wanted to focus on base building.

This.

Not only does it generate money and nanites, but 20% of the time, you also receive a free storage augmentation device.
