99% of the creatures are not aggressive and die in a few seconds. They will respawn almost immediately thought.

It not required unless you want to do some of the guild missions. But for the most part it can be avoided.

it is totally optional. You dont need food to survive. You only need to kill animals if you accept missions to kill them or if you need meat for cooking (which is totally optional, too. You dont need anything produced with meat).

You don't have to kill animals if you don't wish. most leave you alone. Sometimes there are some that are predatory so you can run fly away etc.

To a great extent it is optional. There are some station missions that require you to thin the herd. You can usually find the reward some other way, but it might be a problem for increasing your rep with one of the factions.

I usually pick an aggressive critter planet to do that work so it doesn't feel so bad.

For the most part fauna are for farming, they provide a variety of Milk and Eggs used in recipes.
