All the work for a 30 second ride to the next planet....probably not worth the trouble.
I think it would make sense to revise at least some of the exocraft into two or four seaters.
The easy solution would just be to have ships that are effectively carriers as multi-player ships.
Multiple people can board and assist on one bigger ship that acts like a carrier... and any player can launch their own ship to act as a fighter escorting said carrier (or just flying away.)
Maybe make carriers have special weaponry that helps you capture some base or point of interest but have limited anti-fighter capabilities requiring players to use their own ships to defend them while they do their thing... maybe a mining operation or something... and then you re-dock to travel to the next place.
I'm just giving a couple of ideas obviously.
Star Citizen does it just fine. There's ships in that game that can have up to 14 different people doing different things, piloting, gunnery, engineering, medical, etc. If the 'owner' disconnects, someone else can just pilot the ship. And yeah, you can walk around inside them (the bigger ones).
Elite Dangerous has multi-crew ships (they should since ED ships are stupidly massive), but after 5 mins, multi-crew isn't that fun.
That may be true...but Lindy's talking about NMS. You can't do any of those things in NMS.
Nice neco.
You can already do most if those things without multi crew ships.
To make multi crew ships work they would first have to completely rework the networking and invest in servers to fix synch'ing which is currently terrible and makes MP utterly pointless. Then they would need to rework combat and any other game mechanics multi crew ships would interact with.
Have different players crew different parts of a ship sounds good in theory, but in practice one player per ship work much better. Controlling a whole ship is always more fun that controlling part of a ship.
I can imagine a lot of crazy stuff, but that doesn't mean any if it will actually work.
Controlling just 'one thing' basically means you're idle most of the time unless you are the ONE person actually driving/flying. And, of course, the most aggressive, selfish tool that you are playing with always insists on being that person so, unless you are that ass-hat, you end up just being 'along for the ride' half the time.
