name, significant facility type, vault exchangeable treasure types, number of vaults "used up" pending facility reset, other nearby valued feature, if applicable (in this case Curious Deposit).
Space is limited. You may have to adopt some digraphs, personal abreviations, contractions, etc. Text shortening conventions.
Though I don't usually mark/claim Minor Settlements, but these days I try to always do it with the first one I find on a planet. The type is always MSet1.
Having one inhabited place landmarked just seems "friendlier". In the remainder of the line, I may put some coded info about the planet.
For my own references,I do what dreamrider does - use base computers and use them to name stuff with whatever is on my mind about the planet, and a few save becaons for other POI's. eg, Paradise Low Sentinel System, Interceptor Small Blue, Copper Cobalt Cave Bonanza blah blah. :)
I wish Save Beacons could also have inputted titles, maybe allow less spaces for it, even if I could only see them while on a planet/system (not on galaxy map)- or at minimum, I REALLY wish if you run across other players bases/save beacons, that they would be a different icon color from the ones YOU place. Having them all be white on a planet filled with 50 other player's beacons is just gah.
Planet name is usually just the type: Too Hot (it's extreme)
But otherwise like everyone else I set down one base, usually at MSet with info like SS if good stuff at space station, blah blah. CDs get their own base w quantity until I have 3 over 20 then get rid of all the little ones. I go back occasionally on a long running save and dump some old bases just for drill. I also make all the systems disappear that got scabbed on at the anomaly. That makes me crazy, well crazier than I already am.
I know, overthinking it but I always know what's going on so it works for me.
This really helped when going through all the galaxies. Always labeled the furthest system out as 700k and jump system as 4k if I found first contact, pretty easy after the first few galaxies and usual suspects.
So that is helpful to know. However, in my mind, it is still very different from what I want - eg not putting the onus on the player. Should still default where you see not-yours as some default not-custom-pickable color.
Maybe it's just me tho. ;p
View from space is non-issue. But if trying to roam on the planet - colors can hide easily depending on what the planet colors are. The save beacon diamond can be hidden in the terrain.
Typically, I use Blue or Yellow for A/S-cl crashed ships, Purp/Red for other things worth finding.
Most of the time, I just put a base and name it accordingly if it seems important enough I would want to return there. Portal, Deep water world, Massive caves, etc.
More often, I just pick a theme and name the system/planets in accordance with the theme. For example: Stooge System, with planets Larry, Moe, Curly, Joe, and Shemp.
I did find a planet with the largest cave systems I have ever seen in 4,000 hours. Large enough that you could easily fly two ships through the passage ways. I put a base on that one.
