What Flys faster than a beetle?
I have been hunting flying companions as they are a blast in VR

I came across a beetle that was listed as "to small to ride" and I got it to lay an egg.

I threw some storm crystals in the size mod slot a few times (4 but pretty sure that was overkill)

Hatched it and not only is it absolutely massive it is jaw droppingly fast especially while using the "sprint"

So here is the rub. Both VR as well as any time looking through your scanner is First Person view only. Because the beetle is so large, the entire bottom half of the screen is blocked in first person.

My question is:
Will the moth/butterfly spawn as "to small to ride" ever? Or any other flying companion for that matter, as this seems to be the trick in getting high speeds.

Apologies for the long posts.

The giant eagle bird like flies as fast as a ship
I have eggs

Ooh are those the moded ones? Or is it something you can find solo?

*edit also I do this so I can scan while I'm riding the pet. So once it comes to mods/save editing there is the possibility of actually moving too fast to accurately scan as so far I haven't used any mods or glitches this hasn't been a real possibility

Judging by wing speed, I'd wager an African swallow is faster than a beetle. Unladen of course.

Wing tip to wing tip I'd say African but at a max load the European is arguably just a bit faster.

*edit on a side note I play on switch as well so for that side of things mods, edits, and gifts are out

No mod, someone once gave me one of those eggs, they're the size of a gek and when hatched it's a giant brown bird since then I farmed those eggs and give them away to those who want one

Edit: someone must've made it with the egg splicer obviously someone who really knew what he was doing cause this is really cool

You could probably use save editors to increase pet speeds. I know you can make them bigger/smaller, aggressive/not aggressive etc as you please. Fiddled around with that once for lulz. Robot dogs towering over tall POI's etc.

Didn't look for speed tho.
Ya just about all things are possible with save edits and mods but ideally I want something legit so I can replicate it on switch as well

Personally I think a land animal with very long/tall legs is better than most (legit) flyers. Like 4-leg robot dogs, or the mantis-head thing with many legs.

If you breed them to huge sizes, their legs become long enough that they can go through most "moderate puddles" without dismounting the player. If the pets belly touches the water, that kicks you off - or around there. Not an ocean or deep lake, obviously. They'll cover ground faster at that size and I find them easier to control than flyers. Just me tho.

EDIT: not all pets can be grown to max height, ofc, last I knew.

I have a bird too but it might be too fast to scan things. Second best thing I have is a giant worm. I can share/trade eggs with you if you want :)

Are flying birds/worms etc legit? I thought that basically if an animal doesn't ever naturally land on the ground when not a pet, it can't be tamed. I know when flying birds get close to or stuck on my sky-bases the tame icon never comes up.

edit: eg I always figured people giving out such eggs have enabled them in editors or something of that nature.

Worms are rewards for an expedition so they are legit.

There's a precise Mod for this...

Being able to tame those flying creatures in the first place requires a mod or save editing. But they can lay eggs that can be given to other players and the hatched animal works as you'd expect, even on consoles.

So PC players modded their games and then started spreading the eggs around.

Ya you can break all kinds of things wide open with mods.

For VR I do play on PC but on switch mods are not an option. Nor is getting an egg from another player.

So it comes down to what can be done naturally in game.

My thought was if beetles can be found that are "to small to ride" then maybe I could find a butterfly/etc that also was "to small to ride" and Jack it's size up and see if it comes even close in speed
I don't know what determines if a fauna can be initially ridden, outside of size. It seems a bit random at times, although mostly if they're very small, can't be. It could be a "rare variant" that occurs, something like that. Or perhaps ones that are initially shown to be "infants" vs. adults, since they are still little, stuff like that.

I found a .4m non-flying fauna that can be ridden (one of those newer plant/flower creatures), but I've also found .4 fauna that cannot be. No idea. :)
