A newb question about gifting
So, I got gifted, (presumably not by accident), a half-stack of Starship AI Valves in the Anomaly. That's 300M units worth. Now don't get me wrong, I appreciate the gesture... but I don't want em. The guy who dropped them on me vanished and the name doesn't show up on Steam. I'm enough of a scrub at the game to not know how or if I can contact him in-game. So... is this kind of thing normal? And what do I do with these things now? I hate to destroy them, but I don't want to break my experience.

Delete them.
Some players give items randomly. Unless your inventory is full you can't really refuse those items. You can either dispose of them, give them to someone else, or store them for later use.

I do go to the Anomaly and occasionally ask other players for specific items, via the ingame messaging. It's a great way to get access to those items hard to find.
Likewise when I see a request pop up I gladly help where I can.

It would be nice if HG could integrate an exchange board or market between players.

yeah, just destroy them. I'm sure many are well-meaning, but when newer players get stuff like that and sell them, it skews said player's experience and robs them of much of the joy from that early to mid-game grind and busywork that's so rewarding to me and it can leave a newer player with a false idea of what the game is like. I personally wouldn't keep and sell gifts like that until I've done a playthrough or two of the game enough to get through the main story. At that point you've a better idea of the value of those units and just how potent of a thing it can be

i agree with what others have written... delete them, give them away, or store them for later use... 300million isn't that much, really... i mean, it is a huge amount in the early stages but overall it is pocket change later on...
Unless you don't care about NMS already, deleting them is the best course. Using the gifts will ruin your game...essentially removing any reason to move forward- unless you are incredibly strong willed. Same as if Bezos gave you an unlimited credit card to do whatever you please. It would be impossible for most people to carry on with some kind of normal life if the sky was the limit and they were not prepared for that.

After 5000 hours, I can say I am immune to such ploys, but it is a real cold water bath if you are still new to the game and playing for the "reveal". Once you figure that out, you may just shrug and carry on, like me. But it would have ruined my game several thousand hours ago.
There is one player who has boasted on this board about "gifting" large quantities of starship AI valves to random folk in the anomaly. They seemed impervious to protests that they should ask before giving. So, yes, delete them and carry on with your game.
It is a form of what I call "soft griefing". Sure, some folks (probably quite young ones) don't realize how ruinous largess like the 2.5B =U= of stuff I received on my first visit to the Anomaly might be. But I think a lot of the glad handed "Givers" who hang around the Anomaly looking for newbies are, in fact, DELIBERATELY trying to ruin other peoples experience, or at least give them moral angst ("Should I??? Is it a gift from the Devil? Will I miss some play challenge?").

For years, the bulk of the community has asked HG to make a default transfer setting of "must ask - recipient must allow" ... but it still seems to be falling upon deaf ears.

This is why most turn OFF MP when they go to the Anomaly in a serious solo playthrough.

I often receive important gifts in the anomaly.

The first time this happened to me, I was extremely surprised. I didn't know it was possible.

Now, most of the time, I store them in my freighter and then distribute them to players who request resources without specifying which ones.

Yeah, this was the thread you were talking about...

They are not alone in their attitude either... I've had people tell me they would intentionally grief me with donated goods if they get the chance just for voicing that I don't want people's unsolicited goods. It's sad, but some people just have a savior complex and have to force their goods on others to feel self worth...

Unfortunately the only options available are to destroy the goods, pass them on, or keep them. But don't feel bad about destroying them (which is what I would recommend), most people who make such "donations" didn't get them legitimately, they either used a duping glitch or a save editor

Good comment. Although some love getting unexpected gifts, others are put off by it. A better solution would be for Hello Games to add an "offer and response interaction. That would let the proposed recipient decide to accept or decline with less irritation to some.

I'd be OK with that. I often exchange a few critical resources with playing partners when lack of resources would slow down the mutual adventuring.
When I was new and grinding to buy my first ship I would have welcomed such a gift. The only thing anyone gifted me was 1 unit of carbon! Anyhow, some like it, some don't. All you can do is delete it or cash it in since they will never give us the ability to block gifts.

I'd like to see a trade screen popup where both players can see the active trade & have to accept it. It's been a year or 15, but IIRC that's how old school WoW did it back in the day.

Not that I'd expect HG to ever do that. I'm sure we'll get bows & arrows sooner.

New (wall mounted) bear rug to finally replace the busted one?

Does a bear have six legs? or perhaps it is spherical? :steamhappy:
