Dreadnought farm for S class upgrades
I did some retesting after reading an old post and confirm it still works.

(In short: complete dreadnought battle, warp one system away then warp straight back and dreadnought has respawned, repeat)

When dreadnought battle starts, disable its warp drive, then let it destroy the civilian ship.

Then destroy dreadnought sheilds to get it to surrender. At this point you will get an S class freighter upgrade without landing on the dreadnought.

You can warp away and back at this point if you don't want the money or the ship otherwise land on the dreadnought.

You can shake down the captain for around 6mil but the real reason to land is to check and see if it's an S class you want to take instead.

Then the ol' warp one system away and warp back to battle again.

S Class freighter upgrades only come if the civ freighter is destroyed. Rack up on them while hunting for that perfect S class dreadnought.

That's how I got mine. It's funny though, after warping into my own dreadnought a few times, I'm looking at smaller ones with some envy. Not enough to switch, but it's there in the back of my mind.

I took an A class but I'm still grinding for S class. I got lucky and first freighter had a system scanner module that I had not unlocked yet

I've never got an upgrade module if I've touched the warp engines... but I'd never waste my time doing that anyway, as it only takes about 30 secs to take down shields and destroy the thing.... (which does grant the module)

Taking out the warp engines is what triggers the dreadnought to surrender, but yeah, apparently it does still give the upgrade reward if you let the civilian freighter get destroyed (it takes about 3-4 mins for that)

It's also worth finding two (or more) dreadnought spawns in close proximity as you'll only have to warp once between each fight instead of twice

I know the dreadnought has turrets all over it but does your freighter ever actually engage in combat?

I had not actually considered a non capital freighter as I assumed they would not be as good in combat.

But I got a dreadnought yesterday but have yet to see it shoot at anything

Yes, it does, but only if you are very close to it...

Ya waiting for the civilian ships to be destroyed greatly increases the time it takes. But I'm greedy and I want all the rewards
If you do not destroy the civilian ship, you can check that one too... might be a purdy S class...

My system for this, i set my freighter in such a location I could scan both Dreadnaught and Civ from the deck of my freighter, so I could quickly check both. I was at max money, so I didnt need to shake them down or get a reward. This sped up the process, for me.

Ohh I like this idea. I'm definitely trying this

Are you calling in your freighter after the battle starts?

Or do you have it parked in a pirate system and warp around until a battle starts when you warp to the system with your freighter

I'm assuming you have to warp into the system to trigger the fight then land on your freighter to scan them and if it's what you want then jump back in your ship to join the battle?

If you want the upgrade without letting the civilian freighter get destroyed, then you can't touch the warp engines
But yeah, it's almost always an S class upgrade (I used to think it was 100% chance for S, but I've once got an A class, out of hundreds of battles)

Edit, just realised you meant that the civilian ship could be an S class freighter... which yeah, it's worth checking, but you wont get the freighter upgrade module if you let it live when forcing the dreadnought to surrender

but you could complete 3 more battles in the time it takes to wait...
Which is both more fun and more profitable

I didn't realize you could get an upgrade if you didn't shoot dreadnought warp drive.

I always wanted to either steal or destroy it. That would save time if I don't care about taking the ship
Better still: dreadnought ping-pong. Find *two* systems with perma-battles in warp range from one another.

I thought the battle triggered after a certain number of warps, making getting two going at once tricky.

Unless I'm wrong about what triggers the battle

Yup, the upgrade was always the reward for destroying the dreadnought, and going for the surrender option normally prevents it, but letting the civs die somehow causes you to get both options...
You used to be able to get either an upgrade or 3 bulkheads but I've not seen bulkheads as a reward for at least a year now...

Yup, I like to get one for each race so I can get easy rep for all 3 while I hunt my upgrade modules...
And I like to get 2 for the race I want to pilot my dreadnought if I'm looking to capture...

5 warps and 3 hours triggers the normal freighter battles and sometimes dreadnought battles. But there are systems that spawn dreadnoughts every time you warp into the system (about 10-20% of hostile systems, iirc)
