So I upgraded my fighter...
I upgraded my magnificent spear fighter from A class to S class and got an increase of 22 damage and even less shields, and some maneuverability. It was already on 48/12 storage so not sure if upgrading class was meant to give more or not.

Is it just me or is this totally not worth the 50k nanites. I don't glitch farm them so it took forever to gather that many.

What are the core stats of your S class/exotic ships?

My fighter is 233.8 damage and 189.5 shields and 406.5 maneuverability

Nope.
Much easier to wait for an exotic if you want good stats quickly.
I spent hours in a lvl 3 economy space station buying the cheaper A and B class ships to scrap for mods to sell for nanites and didnt come across a single S class ship let alone an exotic.
Here's my primary fighter in my main save. I have the maximum number of S-class upgrades for Pulse Engine, Launch Thrusters, and Shields (3 each in Tech and General inventory). No mods or save file edits. *Edit: core stats are damage 235.2, shield 184.9, hyperdrive 101.0, maneuverability 423.7. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2864405277
The game is so generous on giving us credits and nanites that upgrading is just an activity to bleed a little of the excess. Even if you actively try not to make credits, you will end up at the $4B threshold where the counter quits ticking over.
Cool, at least I know my ship stats are reasonable now. I dont like how the game calculates modified damage, seems you can just add all weapon types to raise potential damage really high but you can only use one weapon at a time which makes its displayed stat useless.

It was worth it IF you really love the design and color scheme. Dont think about min-max too much. If you love that ship, now you got a beautiful S in it. Remember to have fun in this game, enjoy the little things. Careful with hard grinding the same thing, do different things. For example, there are plenty of ways of farming nanites, if you are not into recipes/crafting like myself (because its broken how strong it is), you could hunt sentinels and sell its modules, etc.

Anyway, my point is, if you are in love with that ship, it was worth it. Dont overthink. Have fun.
For the most part, I only use the photon cannons and rockets when fighting pirates. I have another fighter with more weapons in it, so the core damage stat is a bit higher, but as you said, you can only fire one weapon at a time. The main damage stat for me is "do I consistently win the battle?"
The ship i have isnt my perfect one, it just came with mid 30s slots which helped when farming freighters for frigate modules to upgrade my freighter.

The ship combat in this game is far from difficult so min maxing for it isnt worth it but now that i have a decent one ill just see what i come across during normal play to see if i find something i like better.

It would be nice if they did an update that focused on space combat to make the stats more useful. I dont feel like there is a need for any specific ship type to do any kind of roles ingame. To me it seems storage slots > than everything else
When I first started playing NMS I was very observant of stats and specs in everything, but as I progressed I realized that the absolute spec numbers became less important and exploring, learning, deciding what I really wanted in design, colors, etc., as mentioned above, became more important and the specs took care of themselves. Having said that, I do max out the storage on any starship or freighter that I acquire, at least for the ones I want to keep.
Wild S class starships generally have higher core stats than an upgraded one.

The same star-ship will have the exact same upgrade core stats whether it goes from C to S or A to S.

Honestly starship stats in this game doesn't really matter a lot unless you're a perfectionist. It's a casual game.

You are aware that by upgrading to S class your Tech slots can now go to 21, right?
Did not know that, so I guess it was worth it after all
I'm starting to get the impression that simply setting a ship to S-Class in the Save Editor doesn't actually change its base "potential". I can't find where it is stored either, so I'm guess it is autogenerated from the ship seed.
PLUS I'm starting to get the impression that there are probably C, B, A and S versions of the seeds for particular ship appearances....
Can anyone confirm if their ship seed changes when they upgrade the ship or not?

I mean I'm not THAT worried.
My ships can annihilate basically anything the game throws at me effortlessly... but their damage output when you look at them still seems to be around.... 130ish. It is just weird.

Maybe I should save-edit them back down to C rank and then upgrade them manually.

Ah. I forgot about that. I basically only have the Photon Cannon, the laser thingie and the rocket launcher.... so that might be the reason.
I forgot to check the stats on my Living Ship, now I think about it.

Also I wonder if there will be any trouble with the Exotic Squid I ... um.... made from a copy of my main ship.
Only way to tell the real damage is mouse over the actual weapon in your ship inv to see its dps. This of course, goes up as you add uogrades for it.
The stats of my current main save's S class fighter are:
Storage: 48+21+21
Damage: 284.5
Shield: 290.3
Hyperdrive: 1546.3
Maneuverability: 621

Not the best by a long shot, and I've made no attempts to improve them (by buying more mods to see if I can get better roll on them), since it suffices for all the content I tend to do. I mostly keep it because I like the looks of it.
