The save point is only usefull in bases, you don't need to see it from far because it's already the point of the base itself.
I rarely use them for saving since my ship is usually close by.
I put a save point near my teleporter and make a habit of saving anytime I come back to base. It is a good way to avoid losing too many hours if things go wrong.
One tip: NEVER EVER save your game inside a manufacturing center. I think the tool work inside now, but have heard tales of folks doing that to find themselves trapped inside when the door respawned.

Yup can shoot in the facilities as I usually get followed in there by sentinels where upon I kill them. No idea if doors shoot off from inside.
Save beacons are great but not on planets where 5 or 6 others are using them. They can hide a base icon as well which can be a pain. But function wise they are good. I do long hikes quite a bit and they are great just to fix and save then F5 delete again...
What's the difference?
