mods or no mods
Hey Community,

I wanted to ask you if you prefer to play NMS with mods or without mods.

Please explain your pros and cons.

If you play with mods, please list your most important / existential mods.

Just a heads up, since there will be a large update soon adding mods now would be a really bad idea currently as many would break and be non functional for an unknown period.

I understand your forewarning. But let's assume the scenario that the mods don't have any problems with the next update...

Depends on what you want to do or "fix" then we can go from there. What bothers you or what would you like to see. Personally I use a few that improve building bases.
Weaver is right, updates break most of them, but the popular ones are fixed within a day or two.

No mods.

This game is too easy as it is.

That's good of you to say.
What bothers me, but what is also only a small thing, is that when you learn new words at knowledge stones, they are still displayed in the radar.
I would like to have used knowledge stones hidden on the radar.

This game is too easy as it is.

It should not only be about mods that change / simplify the gameplay, but also about other mods that e.g. change the planet construction or the vegetation, just graphical mods.

You asked, and I answered.

I've been playing another Steam game, Ark Survival Evolved, where I'm fine with mods (as well as the fact that you can heavily modify the game without mods). In my experience, the mods breaking because of updates is a huge nuisance, so the mods I choose to play with have to be worth the hassle.

Changing planet construction, vegetation doesn't seem worth the hassle to me.

I just want my Imperial Star Destroyers...

Hmm there doesn't seem to be any current mods that affect the knowledge stones visibility. There was a few that made transparent or reduced the size of icons, but those are from 4 or 5 years ago and are broke due to being abandoned.
As for what I have:

Beyond Base Building- Extremely helpful mod! I got tired of the constant error messages of parts not being able to connect. This fixes about 90% of that. It also allows me to resize just about any building part and color it. This is multiplayer friendly, meaning it doesn't add objects, just pulls from a clients files so all can see.

Fine LOD- I run a Nvidia RTX 3080 and was annoyed that the textures at my feet would sometimes go blurry. Annoyed that objects in the distance would "pop in", this reduces that, it still happens but not as much as "vanilla". This card should cut thru this game like butter, but we are up against an engine from years ago, it can only do so much with the tech that was current back then.

ArghWater- Fantastic shader mod! Makes the water look 100% better, this is a definite must grab for anyone.

HD Clouds- Makes the planet clouds look better from space.

GGame Hotspot- Increases the detection range for hotspots. Got tired of scan, scan , scan..you get the picture.

GShip Frequency Traders- I use this to make npc ships show up faster. Other than bases, my other main focus is ship hunting. This just makes it so I don't have to stand in place for an hour lol. I still have to wait, but this makes it easier.

That's all I use for now and they are regularly updated when patches hit. I see no cons, because I don't mind updating them and if they break, no big loss because I can just play vanilla like I did before.

There are some environmental mods that many like, but these generally only work if the visiting player has it installed, i.e. if you have a mod that alters the landscape visitors won't see it unless they have the same mod installed. Same goes for mods the add base building parts that can't normally be used.

A couple examples of simple mods that many like would be the 'dark space' type mod that reduces the bright gas clouds in space, and the 'less asteroids' type which is one that I like.

Some of the base buildings mods don't add any new parts, they just allow resizing/rotation options for existing parts that are tricky to do in vanilla play.

Edit: Like Thrackk said 'Beyond Base Building' is a great one that I also use.

Oh yea having space black and less asteroids are BIG ONES for some folks!

Another thing, while already said that it may be a good idea to wait till after the update to see which mods are getting fixed if broken, also keep in mind that some mods can conflict with others. Mod authors normally will list which internal files are being altered on the download site so you can see in advance if there may possibly be a potential conflict.

Definitely mods because no mods is boring
Mods I cannot play without

EUCLI-EA, Kibbles&bits those are for base constructions and are my two major mods
black space
no speed lines
no @teroids
power plus

Pros for the construction is this instead of boring bland base
For the scale of it, If you focus on the lower middle part between the two palms, there's a teleporter, that base is like a city that pic shows only a small part of it. (more pics in my screenshots)

https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2566872944

Cons, when there's an update my bases are gone for a few days, fortunately those two modders update fast. Other con but for me it's not important, no one can see my bases if they don't also have these mods, for me it's like a cloaking device lol

From somebody who does not understand what mods are...

Mods are not cheats, they CAN be, but that's not what they are...

Many mods make games harder and more challenging
Some simply change way something looks
