My base filled with dirt and disappeared?
I had built a flat area with a base and logged off yesterday, today it's filled with dirt and my base is buried.

Is this normal and should I not flatten areas?

sometimes the game will decide to regen the ground if to much is taken out and it will fill up any bulidings there. if you dont want your main base to be buried bulid it a little up from the ground.

It's recommended by most people not to flatten areas for building bases, but rather to find a flat area in the first place, or raise the base up.

If you ARE going to flatten though, at the very least flatten after dropping the base computer, rather than before. Even then though, terrain loves to regrow, so the above 'other' options are better.

Oof, I guess I'll have to move the Alpha site...

Also, can you "lock" where the ship lands when you use the wormhole? Mine keeps landing in a cave...

LOL...that sounds fun trying to get out. If you build a landing pad at your base, the ship should go there when you teleport to the base. But with no landing pad, I have no clue how to get it to go to a specific spot.

I've seen people say that it just 'remembers' where your ship was when you first dropped the base computer, but my own experience is that is not at all the case. I pretty much always build a landing pad for all of my bases to make sure it goes where I want it.

Got it, I didn't build a landing pad yet, still early on.

It is usually best practice to not touch a terrain manipulator anywhere near your base or prospective base. Things can stabilize a bit once you have set a base computer...but still not recommending terrain manipulation.

You can use the "floor" pieces to flatten things out and I have had a few bases where they are still fine after months even though I was flattening a steep cliff side. Important to upload your base after setting in stuff like that and cross your fingers it will stick in that configuration.

In some cases I have gotten a little bleed in of terrain at the edges using that technique but it only takes a second to clean it up again.

It grows back quicker if you have MP on and visit the Anomaly regularly. The theory is that the game confuses your terrain edit limit with other players and will regrow the terrain if anyone in your "party" has exceeded the limit. The game seems to auto group you with other players in the anomaly.

another possibility is someone went to your base and did some re-decorating, i might be wrong but i think every save file starts with gameplay settings allowing others to add parts to your base

Be sure steam cloud is off. Usually better not to dig, but some enjoy that type of base , even if they have to keep clearing it out.

I often build up off the ground enough that i can go underneath the landing pad.... funny thing how landing pad blocks weapon fire ...

My first base, with massive and awesome parking garage, got pompeiied after 2 months, like yours.
These days I run the terrain manipulator in restore mode, get ahead of things to come, work with the landscape.

You need to build the BIG EXPENSIVE landing pad to guarantee the ship lands there. The little cheap one doesn't do that.

I have one really massive base. Normally, I avoid building into the ground, but for this one a tiny corner is embedded in a hill. Once in a while, I have to go in and clean it up with the terrain manipulator to remove the rocks. It's intermittent, though. I can play for days and it doesn't happen, then one day the inside will be all rocked-in again.

It doesn't matter whether you flatten or not; I have built multiple bases now on top of the land, even elevated above it with just walls as the foundation. When I came back, the base was under the ground; a few days later, I found the base above ground again.

Here is a thread showing my base sinking and rising back up. I had never flattened the ground before. I did dig it out after it sunk, but I never raised it.

Last I checked there is a cap of how much ground the player can displace. This is overall. So if you are digging on a planet 500 systems away from you base and exceed the cap, the base starts to fill in.

Yeah stay away from the terrain manipulator. It's for mining, not building.

Learned that the hard way when i tried to do an underground exocraft hangar.

Rule of thumb about building a base. Always build 1 level above ANY terrain. I usually drop a Platform structure then plop a square or round pod on top of that then remove the base structure. Its easy to build a ramp or stairs from the pod down to terra firma. If you like that walls on the ground look then place walls into the lowest part of the terrain first and work your way around the perimeter. And you can add walls below ground using the auto-fit option to put walls that seem to be completely submerged. Just bear in mind that terrain will always back fill to its original shape and ensure your actual structure is above that highest mound of dirt.
