Cannot find carbon
I am on a planet called Naomensis. There are no trees and all the plants give oxygen. Floating slabs of stone which give ferrite. Absolutely no carbon anywhere. Anyone know where I can find carbon? Are there actually planets in this game that are devoid of carbon? This seems extremely stupid.

Why do you need carbon? Take off and find another planet?

It sounds like you don't use your scanner. Have you installed it?

Carbon exists in some form on all planets, even completely barren ones. If no plants or animals exist that can give carbon, then look for red spikey crystal patches. Those give carbon (the smaller patches). The larger red patches need a mining tool upgrade to mine, so ignore those until the proper tool is acquired.

Also note that this is true for oxygen, sodium, and di-hydrogen as well. Oxygen and sodium can appear as flowers (red and yellow respectively), and di-hydrogen appears as blue crystals.

One biodome, cactus growing. Each cactus plant yields 150+ cactus fruit. Refiner will turn that into a 300+ units of carbon. Fairly fast, too. I just planted one biodome with many cactus and with one touch of the "harvest all plants" button on the dome, I get over 30,000 cactus fruits. When refined, that will yield 60,000+ carbon. About 6 inventory slots full. No wait except the first round because plants grow on their own in the background while you do other things, and you can also refine in the background. Never be short of carbon again, ever. It's almost too easy.

If he has a refiner some resources refined become carbon

Sounds like your on a Rare Exotic Glitch world. RED crystals, marked with a red 'C' by your scanner have carbon, there could be some in a cave also...

My scanner is not chowing carbon, only sodium, oxygen etc.

No idea where to find that?

I am actually trying to get my advanced mining laser, so I don't have it yet and thus cannot harvest the red crystals.

I can get various plant fruits/herbs but I need carbon as fuel to refine them which I don't have.

I've been in 3 caves and the plants in them give either oxygen or some kind of roots/herbs only.

Don't have advanced mining laser.

Ok, so you are at the very very start of the earliest beginning possible. Every starter planet has lots of plants on it...it's designed that way. Any plant will give you carbon when you destroy it with your mining laser. Many alien "plants" don't really look like Earth plants, so you may have to shoot around at that start to find out which is which. Usually the moment you start shooting something it will tell you what the major component is, like Carbon or Ferrite Dust.

heh didn't know that, have to remember it when i need a quick source of carbon. save some time from flying to a planet to shoot up the forests!

Just remember refiners only batch process a maximum of 4096 units of product at a time. You will need about 10 refiners to make 40,000 + while you are out doing other stuff. Depends on your need though. Usually I only need 2 refiners going, and that almost fills a 9999 inventory slot, which is all I need for incidental use throughout the game. The rest of the cactus I bank for stasis device manufacture.

Yeah, on my freighter i keep moderate sources of each plant type for quick use and replenishment of my current stock, and massive farms on planets for large projects.

Finally found it. There was a type of rock on the ground that had it but it was hard to find. Most of the other rocks were similar and didn't have the carbon.
Kaeru Gaman Sep 13, 2020 @ 12:11am
each planet has three types of small rocks in each of two "land" biomes. quite often the a biome has two kinds of rocks looking very similar but yielding different ressources.

you only need the advanced for the BIG ones. the small ones around it you can harvest with the small laser or even smashing them with melee attack [ Q ]
the small yield carbon, the big yield condensed carbon.
