You're not doing anything wrong... Outlaw systems have the highest chance for S class, but you will mostly encounter C class
if you want a S-Class and can't or don't want to deal with hunting crash sites hoping to stumble across it, you have two choices
1) use either NMS coordinate exchange or youtube vids to get a known S-Class location of a ship that you like the look/stats/SC slots placement
(for either source, turn off MP before going to the system and follow the instructions for getting the ship)
2) there is a couple of mods that put sentinel ships in the spawn pool of npc ships... then you can buy or part exchange for them (but you'd still have to deal with the RNG of ships arriving at stations+outposts)
5% is one in 20 :), keep on hunting.
2. Each system has 1 model of sentinel ship (where it appears) and _multiple_ crash sites on planet(s). Each crash site may contain S class sentinel ship.
3. You may almost infinitely search crash sites on planet by interaction with Autophage computer(s). They will give you most likely different crash site coordinates (and sometimes the old ones).
2 & 3. The Autophage can respawn the interceptor spawn sites when they give the missions (same as when you clear wave 5 against corrupted sentinels) but there are a limited amount of crash sites on a planet, and each site will always give the same class of ship each time you are sent there...
Ships found = 40
C class = 35
B class = 3
A class = 2
S class = 0
So, the stats almost exactly match the distribution provided by Shadow Strider, except that so far, no A class.
Just about to go to a more peaceful planet to farm more resources for another 20. The one up side is that I now have more credits than I ever thought I would need. On average about 25 million per ship.
I found about 5 ships total..... none of them are flyable except the one i fixed the launch thruster on. I bought a stunning looking B class and i'm happy enough with it. I also have a C class frigate which i'm equally happy with for now until..... actually i need more main missions.
Enter the C-class ship and exit to create restore point, upgrade it to S-class. If results is not favorable, just reload restore point, scrap that ship and try the next one.
So current results are as follows:
C class = 54
B class = 3
A class = 3
S class = 0
My logical brain says its just random luck, but it feels like its rigged.
I have another 15 inverted mirrors, so, I might use them up and I I dont get an S class I'll upgrade the A class I kept.
It's not random. You reload and it'll be the same crappy ship. I come to visit you and I'll see that same crappy ship.
Even if you play offline, find a ship, text me the coordinates, I'll go there while I'm offline also... same crappy ship.
It's pre-determined. All derived from the system coordinate. Very clever.
If you are going to different crash sites each time, then the chances are as listed above, but you will eventually get sent back to the same sites if you keep trying on the same planet...
If you care more about the design of the ship (or the Supercharge Slot arrangement) than its stats, then you will often have to accept a ship lower than S class and upgrade it yourself...
note: there are usually more than 5 crash sites on a planet, so you wont be able to leave a save beacon at each one, but you can note down the coordinates so you know when you're revisiting an old site ;)
