Crashed ships always the same.
I haven't played in a long time so I'm unsure if this has changed.
When I played before I remember finding crashed ships of all kinds.
Class A fighters, etc etc.
New game, found about 7 crashes and so far its has always been either the exact same shuttle or exact same hauler with the exception of it being a repair job once and then it was a cool looking ship.

Is this normal or am I just unlucky?

Unlucky

in the same system there's only a small handful of types that the game generates for it and crashed ships will be of the same sorts as the ones that fly in and out of stations. To see more variety beyond that, visit different systems, but if you stay in the same system, don't be surprised if you see the same ships visually, though they WILL vary in class and specs

Patience.
My bud came across S class fighter.
Myself got malfunctional A class Sentinel fighter ( interceptor?).
Just salvage those "the same" ships.
Or get in the fight with Sentinels on Dissonance planets and, may be you'll get Hyline Brain, Harmonic Location Tracker,a.k.a Echo Locator .
These gizmos you need to be able to fly Sentinel ship .

All of these you can do with a little to nothing of units.
I don't know how far you're in the game and how many technology equipment you got, by now.

As Sentient_Pickle mentioned, the procedural generation is based on the Star System you're at, and each star system has a limited number of potential ships that show up as crashed ships. Same goes for ships that land on bases, or even for freighters.

The very next ship I found after this post was a Class B explorer so as usual complaining helps.
Thanks for the info though I didn't know the pool was also dependent on system.

yes i really hope (and that's all one can do in this game) i find a easier fix up without needing to fix inventory slots before you can use them jobbies. i know you only need to fix the launch thrusters and scrap them but still... would be nice. A really cool looking ship. no scratches is a bonus obviously.

not just unlucky... if you want a better chance at fighters then goto vy'keen system,
explorers goto korvac, hauler+shuttle goto gek, solar goto pirate... you can still find all in any but preferred extras are added to the pool as noted above

Yeah i see alot of same crashed ship on the starting planet too. i maybe on the ground for many hours before i find one. Note i started over, trying something different, given up my starting ship (pretend it damage beyond repair) then explore that planet and see if i can get lucky to find one.

the no-starter ship challenge... good for you... even better when done in PD (with max difficulty setting)
