I just used the scanner normally without those supercharge batteries.
What you want to find is an Observatory.
Digging up the 3 keys and opening the chest worked in my expedition.
I didn't bother with the stand alone signal scanner at all. Instead, built the roamer exocraft & upgraded it with the signal boosters, used the signal boosters to locate the ancient ruins,
1. buy technology for the "vagabond" at the anomaly
2. buy the 3 scanner technology for the vagabond
3. build the vagabond and install the 3 levels of scanner
4. scan for ancient ruins (the item before the last one in the scanner menu)
In my case ruins with treasure did not work, what I needed were alien ruins. The ones that offer to teach you a word from one of the languages. You can buy those maps on any space station, just make sure you grab the correct map as one takes you to obelisks and alien ruins while the other map type takes you to the ruins that have keys and treasure chests which don't count.
