Cursed: about to die
Right away my sanity depletes faster than I can get enough di-hydrogen to make glass potion, which does not restore enough to keep me safe. am I supposed to die right away? because that's what's about to happen.

Don't know if you can read Spanish, but in Cursed once your boundary shield empties you don't take damage over time the only danger is the Boundary Horrors that'll continue spawning to kill you.

I never had the problem, but don't remember the details of what I did in the early expedition. I know I bought a stack of 20 dihydrogen jellies a couple times, which refines to 800 dihydrogen. So dihydrogen wasn't much of a problem over the course of the expedition. You need to keep shooting the squids anyway since you need the qualia. Bottom of bell/top of legs is their vulnerable spot. Do any of the early milestones reward glass potions? One of the milestones requires you to let hazard protection drop to zero for awhile. Keep moving and I don't think they're too hard to stay ahead of.

I spent the first 10 to 15 minutes of the expedition doing nothing but running around mining di-hydrogen and shooting the spooks. Literally that's all I did once I had that recipe.

There's a milestone for killing 16 spooks in phase 1 and another latter milestone for killing 64 of them, so I figured there was no reason not to just focus on that until I could make a small stack of the glass elixir.

Don't forget, when you use your scanner's area sweep, it marks dy-hydrogen all around you with icons. Unless you are one of the unlucky people who got stuck on an island at the start, there is di-hydrogen galore.

Just fix your ship and go to the space station and buy dihydrogen jelly there.

Got stuck on an island at the start? Oh, if I was only so lucky. I had to swim to an island! In permadeath :-)

IMO, you really shouldn't worry about looking for dihydrogen. Just look for ferrite to fix your ship, along with a bit of carbon. Once you get your ship fixed, you just need dihydrogen to fuel it.

You need it to make the Elixir of Glass as well, in the expedition. And killing the spooks is a milestone, mining the dy-hydrogen was just "something to do" while waiting for more of them to spawn.

Once I finally did go into space, I bought the di-hydrogen jelly and never mined it again, but at the very start, I was mining while killing. I decided to knock out both milestones for spook-killing before i ever continued on to the next system. And then never think about them again.

i never thought about buying Di-Hydrogen Jelly and refining it back to Di-Hydrogen... i rarely ever buy materials other than Wiring Looms and one or two others i need until i learn their recipes... in the past, i have been known to do the DH->DHJ->DH cycle to build my store of DH but i didn't think about it in Expedition 16... not even after i had built a few bases and placed Medium Refiners...

That’s a great plan; I just mined every dihydrogen Crystal I found as I travelled. There’s a reward for spending time with a depleted barrier, too, so maybe do that at the start and farm up the quallia for the whole expedition.

I started right on a small island, and can't find di-hydrogen anywhere, and those things are just harassing nonstop. And when I do the scan pulse everywhere I don't see any get marked. Should I just restart or am I missing something obvious?

That only works once you have access to a refiner. You get the personal refiner by digging 1600 m underground but that is not a valid option if you are on a small island. I did get jellies and use that now that I finally got the refiner.

I use the Q key to save on carbon for mining I get just as much if not more that way and occasionally the concentrated crystal to break down for more :)

Like I said, you don't need any dihydrogen. You're given everything to fix your ship except one metal plate, which you can make out of rocks. The key is to break down the launch thruster upgrade (I think that's what it is) to get the condensed carbon for the hermetic seal. Use the repair kit for the pure ferrite, mine a few rocks for the metal plate, repair the ship and take off.

If you already used your dihydrogen jelly, then you're probably stuck.

I was dropped in the water, and had to swim to my ship, which was on a small island. I'm playing permadeath with max resource restrictions, so I had to swim to two other islands to get enough rock to make the one metal plate!

Oxygen is the limiting factor in max PD mode, since you can't buy it, and it's pretty rare. None anywhere near where I was at, so I was nursing a sliver of life support trying to reach my ship.

Once you fix your ship, though, you're golden. Just hop in it and pop out of the atmosphere occasionally. No magic potions required.
