He would be better off with Linux as Windows 10 loses security updates early next year. I don't get people who wanna game on PC, but not keep their rigs updated.
Yeah, that's right, but sometimes our buddy, Mr. Wallet 💰, says:" Not now. I have to fatten up a little bit more".
I normally keep my rig relatively up-to-date, specifically because I'm a gamer, but I don't do the upgrades just "because I can". I need actual games to drive that. (It helps that I no longer ever play competitive shooters...I upgraded much more frequently when i did).
So why are you stuck running Windows 8.1 then? At least get modern and go for 10. Even though it is about to run out of security also. But it would at least run more games.
Kind of ticks me off that security updates are going to be ending for it soon. It still runs games I own not just fine, but almost universally across the board on the highest settings. No way I am upgrading my PC just for Microsoft.
Sorry, lost track in thread. Though you were OP. My bad. Really the only big Requirement of 11 is TPM or TMP whichever it is. I was happy with my upgrade. Use much less resources for the basics.

Because windows not being supported doesn't mean games aren't going to work on it.
Windows 10 is still the largest market share (62%). Windows 11 only has 33.37% install rate/market share, which is why they game developers aren't going to drop Windows 10 any time soon. You just won't get updates from Microsoft anymore. Game developers will still focus on it as long as it's market share stays up.
Probably wouldn't work, but I think you'd have a higher chance of NMS working on Windows 7 with it's 2.85% rather than Windows 8.1 at 0.36%.
Linux may be an option depending on the above. NMS worked very when when I did a test on Linux Mint recently. However back up your system first!. While you can get it to dual boot it is incredibly easy to get something wrong and destroy everything Windows related by accident.
It would also be useful if you posted your system specs. If its a desktop, and you are confident with moving hardware around, you could just buy a cheap ssd and swap out your windows disk(s) for the test.
@Jaggid Edge. While MS are likely to end general security updates next year they have said they will be offering up to 3 years extended support for win 10. However they have not posted the cost for home users yet. I guess they are hoping folk will just bite the bullet and switch to win 11. I say likely to end support as they have been stung in the past with users just saying 'nope' when they produce a new version. Think what happened with XP -> vista and win 7 -> 8 and then 8.1 . There have been various YouTube videos about getting win 11 to work without the TPM requirement, but I have not been following developments and do not know how well these work arounds perform.
As for me I'm heading to penguin land at the end of Win 10. I've just had enough of MS and see no reason to chuck a perfectly good PC.
Wow, you really do not know your tech. Security updates are for a reason. It's people like you that are a security risk. Running outdated software with known unfixed vulnerabilities. No program is 100%, but at least a newer one is harder to attack. All the conspiracy theories. LOL. Maybe you should just go to console.
