When the game first came out, a greater percentage of players were on PC, where the keyboard is (usually) right in front of them. It has been released on more and more other platforms since then.
That and with the game having been around for much longer, people have a lot less they want to talk about. This discussion forum, as an example, was a hell of a lot more active as well back then.
That pretty much says it all.
I used to try joining peoples missions they initiated and all that happens is i get removed from the mission, so i don't do that anymore at all. All i do is initiate my own missions and go do it myself.
The only real benefit to having multiplayer on at all is so i can see what type of ships people got.... its mildly interesting.
Buttons for chat,,, had to think where i encountered that before? Ah right, world of warships.... i think the only chat command i used was SHIFT F12.
Seriously, it does become annoying after about 2 minutes. Add on the fact that MP is pretty basic and there is no particular reason to want to do it, I just concluded it was better as a SP game.
I generally turn it off for expeditions though, even if I am playing a current expedition and don't need multiplayer off. All the comm balls at rendezvous points annoy the **** out of me.
Weekend or busier times when players gather, there are always more players sometimes asking for help or doing nexus missions or expedition stuff and chat pops up on screen quite frequently.
The game has quite an international community base and often players at the Anomaly may not use English for example as a first language. But there are options for translation and conversation not immediately obvious.
The game will also translate text (some translations) and surprisingly works okay.
If you use a PC and controller you can assign emote hotkeys and indirectly assign them to controller buttons (using Steam UI in big picture mode). The buttons might fire one or two emotes like 'hello' or 'thank you' but any hotkey for whatever purpose could be used on controller buttons like throwing bait or weapon switching or photo mode for quick access.
for actual typing, hit the ENTER key on the keyboard to bring up the chat... then type and hit ENTER to send... i think you have to hit ENTER each time to open the input field... but yeah, talking and having it transcribed is easier if it can understand your words accurately...

Furry buddies always there for you.
Unless they have business to attend to 😃
