The combat sucks, here's why..
Sentinels are the worst, most obnoxious and boring enemy type. Little flying balls that sometimes rush your possition, are super hard to aim at and now they cal heal each other to full HP. Awesome....
The UI is clunky and not responsive at all. At low ammo I'm mashing R like crazy but the input doesn't register because I was probably jetpacking a second ago and I'm not in "combat state".... bro im trying to shoot down 12 metal balls and and invisible robodog. I don't have the luxury to mess around with reloads.
Lastly It's just not very satisfying. I know its not a combat oriented game but moving further I really really hope they re do the combat. There's a race of fierce warriors but I guess I'll have to take your word for it, I've never fought them myself. I'm fighting metal balls instead. How fun....

all you said is very well known, to everyone and the developers.
im sure we will get a combat update eventually, but they can only focus on one aspect of the game at a time

I had to get it out, Arachnophobia is driving me nuts just like everyone else...

I just hope the combat, and variety of enemies, is a lot better in Light No Fire. 🤞

I have noticed the reload forbid problem.... that IS annoying as F#$@

Even when it manages to permit reloading it still manages to be exceedingly annoying, even with late game tech, that monkey stays on your back.

But i did not have that much trouble with Arachnophobia,,, fairly straight forward, didn't take anything like the amount of time i spent on the fishing one, since i did not happen to know where to fish for 'anomalous' fish and fished all day on the wrong planet.

It’s an exploration game, my guess is combat upgrades are a back burner item for the foreseeable future.

I get it but the combat IS a big part of the game already. Almost every expedition had some combat oriented task, some were all about combat. So I would think that if these problems are well known, a combat overhaul is kind of overdue...

Reloading can be super fast if you manage to seek out a better class of multi-tool than the expedition starts you with. Even a B or A class will help. An S-Class may take longer to discover (or upgrade) but with tips and tricks can be found. The recoil stat can be placed in supercharge slots (if the multi-tool has a few) for a boost and if you find better upgrades (or craft better upgrades) and group them correctly the reload time is almost instantaneous especially with the grouped tech bonuses.

I preferred not to use the expedition prompted pre-packaged pulse spitter as it burns through ammo so fast, despite it being powerful and it's not great against all enemy types. Specific weapons can take a little time to set up but have advantages against different types of enemies and importantly never underestimate the powerful combination of the paralysis mortar and voltaic amplifier with weapons (like the Neutron canon).

Of course any battle will be a challenge if time is not spent in preparation of upgrading and especially if trying to do it quickly early on in the expedition, under powered and under strength. But that can be a fun challenge, especially when knowing what is possible in the game to make it far easier.

If the Arachnophobia milestone is completed early on in the expedition pat yourself on the back. If completed later with all guns blazing you deserve a medal. : D

Yep, combat is, and always has been, a significant aspect of the game.

  • There's a subset of planets where sentinels will always attack you the moment they see you
  • Combat is a key element for the progression of several story mission chains.
  • Several types of lesser missions (stations and anomaly) involve nothing but combat.
  • Over the years, multiple updates have doubled down on that by adding yet more combat scenarios, such as the Desolation, Sentinels, Outlaws and Interceptor updates.
  • Almost every expedition has at least some combat related milestones
  • there were some expeditions where combat was the main focus (Liquidators, for example).
  • I could go on.

And yet, from the beginning, and to this day, there's a subset of the player base that will insist in any thread like this that "it's an exploration game, combat isn't' important". Because Hello Games is kind enough to give players who do not like combat all kinds of ways to avoid it, they've been able to pretty much convince themselves it's not even there.

I honestly have no idea if what your taking about. It the R key once, wait for the animation to complete, then start shooting again. That has never not worked.

We have had several combat updates over the years. What exactly are you wanting?

I'm fairly certain he is talking about instances where pushing R doesn't actually start the reload like it should. It's a relatively common 'issue' that has been in the game for years. I experience it most often on Derelict freighters, but it happens just on planet surfaces on occasion as well.
Stevanator Nov 2, 2024 @ 5:22am
there should be ground wars on planets, fortifications, giant lasers, war vehicles, pretty much everything a normal sci fi universe would have, it sucks that all npcs are kind of like plants, they dont interact with the world either ( they dont mine anyting anywhere, just make funny noises and wave hi ), think about a mix between planetside, and red faction guerilla, and you would have a perfect combat system, let us destroy buildings

ps: if you want to scare your friends, you can do an orbital strike with your ship, just fly directly down at 90 degrees and fire the normal photon laser

Why don´t you use the minotaur? I used it and the mission was completed in a few minutes..

If there's an interactable object showing an E in your view, pressing R to reload has no effect. You have to look away to clear the object from view and then you can use the R button as normal.

I've sort of got used to it and do it automatically now, but it still shouldn't happen that way and, like JE says, it's a particular problem on derelicts where there can be so many Es in view, it's hard to find a clear spot to look at.
